Watkin the inventor of the Wendy Light for nighttime exterior shooting, won the Oscar for 1985's OUT OF AFRICA, a sterling achievement. Mobians will remember his textured lighting on films for Richard Lester (beginning with THE KNACK, and including the Musketeers pictures and HELP!) and Ken Russell (THE BOY FRIEND and especially THE DEVILS are voluptuously shot). Other distinguished credits include CATCH-22, CHARIOTS OF FIRE, and YENTL, with its soft, candlelit glow, filming Brooklyn Heights in its best possible light (Cher, too) for MOONSTRUCK, and the last, not too distinguished Hammer picture, TO THE DEVIL A DAUGHTER.
