Title: NAVAJO JOE out in May..

Anthony Thorne - February 13, 2008 11:34 PM (GMT)
Nicely timed to correspond with my recent purchase of the remastered Morricone soundtrack, DVD Savant lists Sergio Corbucci’s NAVAJO JOE as an upcoming MGM DVD for May. I’ve heard Burt kills a lotta people in this one. I’m not expecting any extras, but if they can at least manage an uncut 16x9 print I’ll be quite happy.

Great news! :)

I'm currently reading Once upon a Time in the Italian West: The Filmgoers' Guide to Spaghetti Westerns by Howard Hughes and watching the 20 films or so that he discusses in it, and NAVAJO JOE was one of the few films on the list I didn't have in one form or another. I'm sure I'll pick up the soundtrack too. I just ordered THE BIG GUNDOWN soundtrack yesterday.

Great News. The film has an awesome soundtrack and a huge body count. Obviously Burt Reynolds' acting is questionable and the script is terrible. But you can't have everything.

Why didn't Burt and Fernando Rey work together more often?

Tim Rogerson - February 18, 2008 09:43 AM (GMT)
Burt couldn't get along with Luis Bunel and turned down the role of the tramp in The Milky Way. Rey never forgave him - in that scene in The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoise where he fires a rifle out of an open window what he's saying in Spanish was "Take that you bastard Burt Reynolds". Oddly, the English subtitles remove the line completely.

Just got an email from DVD Empire that my copy of NAVAJO JOE shipped today. Unfortunately, it shipped media mail from the US East Coast and I live on the West Coast, so I probably won't see it for a week at the earliest. If no one else has received their copy by the time mine arrives, I'll let you know my thoughts.

There's a new review (see link below) of the disc up at DVD Drive-In that notes:

Originally released theatrically in the U.S. by United Artists, MGM thankfully continues to extract from its extensive film library by granting us NAVAJO JOE on DVD. Previously available as a pan and scan VHS cassette, as well as a non-anamorphic Japanese disc released several years ago, this new DVD has the film looking better than ever before. Presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio with anamorphic enhancement, this is a handsome transfer with crisp detail, nice colors and natural fleshtones, all wrapped up in a blemish-free image that proves the immaculateness of the film’s original elements. There’s only one audio option, a clean-sounding English mono track (which carries Reynolds’ real voice) as well as optional English, Spanish and French subtitles.
