Title: Belloq ate a fly
Marty Langford - February 3, 2008 03:44 PM (GMT)
Silly post, I know. But I introduced my son to RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK last night, and during the scene where Indy holds a bazooka on the Nazis from a cliff, we saw Belloq eat a fly!
I hadn't seen the film since acquiring my large screen TV and upconverting DVD player, but it's pretty unmistakable. As Belloq looks up at Indy and delivers a line, a fly lands on his face and seems to crawl into his mouth! Most amazing is that Paul Freeman doesn't miss a beat.
Am we seeing things?
**update**
After typing "belloq fly mouth" on Google, it seems I'm hardly the first one to notice this. Oh well.

I noticed it from the very first time I saw the film. What took everyone so long? :)
Technically it's a flub, I suppose--I can't imagine the fly was on the call sheet that morning--but I'm sure Spielberg-Lucas were so impressed by Paul Freeman's concentration (as was I) they decided to keep it in.
I once saw the great Uta Hagen kill a gnat on stage. The insect was bombarding her and her co-stars on a warm summer night, disrupting the piece. At an opportune moment, one as in character as possible, she extended her hand in a lightning-fast gesture and closed it around the offending bug. Audience members gasped and applauded, and she kept right on going, as if nothing had happened. Better than Raid.

Back before his $20,000,000 paychecks, Nick Cage ate a cockroach in VAMPIRE'S KISS. :o

Ah, you young kids. There was this other time, when I saw the great Alfred Lunt onstage...

Hey, it can be a loong time between breaks. No harm in grabbing a quick snack on the fly. ;)

Wasn't Spielberg or somebody claiming for a time that Freeman didn't actually eat the fly, that there was an edit there, and in the edit, the fly "disappeared"? It could have been that someone made the claim in a tongue-in-cheek manner, but I'm pretty sure that was the official story. Maybe it's on the extras disc on the Indiana Jones DVD box set.
