Anyone seen this yet? It just opened last weekend, and we caught it on Saturday night. The 3D is immersive and quite impressive, but I'll admit to thinking it could've been even more so if the "film" had been shot with IMAX cameras (custom rigs using twin Sony CineAlta HD cameras were used - more tech details at
this article from Wired). But that's a fairly minor quibble - even casual U2 fans should definitely check this out.
That's news to me, I'd just assumed they'd shot it with IMAX gear - however, I've got a ticket for a screening all the same, but not in IMAX, just showing in 3D at a "regular" cinema (much the same as they did with the two different 3D releases of Beowulf). I'd assume it's digital, but I don't know.
I'll wait and see how it holds up on a regular 3D screening before I decide if it's worth the trip to my nearest IMAX (even assuming it ever reaches it).
Saw it today and was thoroughly impressed.
We went to the IMAX in Lincoln Center. A company called RealD has been retrofitting conventional theatres around the country to play 3D movies, so I'd be curious to see how it compares. There are now hundreds of such theatres nationwide and more to come.
I'd be curious to hear opinions on the viability of this as a new platform. No doubt we'll see more 3D films in the future (full disclosure: I'm working on one of my own).
Do you think it'll finally surpass the "fad" status? At a 12:30pm showing on Super Bowl Sunday, the theatre was about 75% full, and tix were $16. I think that's pretty good.
Seeing the preview for Scorcese's upcoming 2D movie about the Stones on the IMAX made my head hurt, whereas U2's film made me want to dive in.
Recommended.
