Guillermo del Toro is in talks to direct back-to-back installments of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" for New Line and MGM says The Hollywood Reporter.
One of the most anticipated literary adaptations of the past decade in the wake of the success of "The Lord of the Rings", New Line has to tread carefully to not upset its billion-dollar franchise or its fanbase.
The resolution of a lawsuit in December put the project back on track, but 'Rings' director Peter Jackson could not take on writing and directing roles due to other commitments - instead he'll serve as executive producer. |

Hey - you stay away from Mobius MadLibs™ - they're my thing! I totally decided that just now! Incensed! Etc.! :P

I'm telling ya:
Ron Perlman as Smaug and Doug Jones as Gollum if Andy Serkis won't come back.
Let's see. Who else can we get from the del Toro stable of actors?
Oo, I know! Kris Kristofferson as Gandalf!
....or Elrond. :P

I think Perlman is an almost certain pick for Smaug. Don't see how that could *not* happen.

The Hobbit is not a certainty yet. We are in advanced talks but nothing 100% sure. I feel privileged to be approached but we all know -from the lists of announcements in the trades- that we must wait until a movie is green lit to make it a reality. Remember, the morning that HELLBOY II was greenlit, I was finishing talks to do the WOLF MAN at the same studio and one cancelled the other... That's how crazy it can get.

I really hope this happens. This really goes into the category of a fan's dream come true.
Jackson would insure that things stay consistent with the other films, while Del Toro could pull off some beautiful imagery, give us a Smaug to remember, and really take the chance to deepen the themes and mythos that Tolkien brought to the books.
Sounds like a win-win, to me.
The only drawback being that some fascinating projects that Del Toro has been working on would be temporarily delayed.
