Title: Mobius TV Guide - the recurring thread of doom
Description: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly on TV

William S. Wilson - January 26, 2008 05:02 PM (GMT)
I got the okay from Marty to do this and thought it would be fun. With over 200+ channels nowadays, it is hard to keep track of exciting stuff coming on TV (especially if you are Tivo-less like me). So, what I will be doing is a (roughly) weekly update of some stuff coming up that might be of interest to Mobians. In most cases, I am aiming for stuff that is hard-to-find or not on DVD (old movies, TV movies, and mini-series).

Right now the channels I am concentrating on are IFC, Sundance, the Encore stations, Lifetime Movie Network, and Turner Classic Movies. If you have more channel suggestions to watch, let me know. Anything that I thought would be of particular interest to Mobians, I highlighted in red. And if you can devise a better layout than below, let me know.

Of course, I invite everyone to participate as my list is - for the most part - entirely subjective. If you know of something great coming up, give it a shout out so we can all tune in (and hope it doesn't suck). :)

A nice idea, thanks.

The second season of TORCHWOOD gets underway tonight on BBC-A at 9pm EST, with repeats later and tomorrow. I'm not really a fan but I like that it's hot on the heels of the first series, which ended its run in December.

Lisa Larkin - January 28, 2008 01:18 AM (GMT)
I suggest adding Fox Movie Channel and Flix, two on my lineup that often have interesting stuff in the original aspect ratio. I also get IndiePlex, which I think is an Encore channel but it's sandwiched between IFC and Flix on my lineup instead of being grouped with the other Encore channels.

Edited to say thanks for doing this. I can't tell you the number of times I've browsed the schedule only to find I missed something I've been trying to see for years, usually on TCM, who don't repeat stuff as much as Flix, FMC, IFC and Sundance.

p.s. Any particular reason EYE OF THE DEVIL is in red above?

Jonathan Barnett - January 28, 2008 02:25 AM (GMT)
"p.s. Any particular reason EYE OF THE DEVIL is in red above?"

Because Sean LOVES J. Lee Thompson movies! Why come to think of it Thompson also helmed two TV movies with George Kennedy. One of them is titled THE BLUE KNIGHT.

And about eight Charles Bronson movies for Cannon, as well as HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

No particular reason other than I think some Mobians who enjoy the thrill of seeing David Niven and Donald Pleasance sharing the screen and being directed by J. Lee Thompson. Definitely some cult factor there and it has never been on video. I've never seen the film myself, so I pray it isn't a stinker. :)

Thanks for the two channel suggestions. I will add them to my list and hopefully find some cool stuff in there.

John Black - January 28, 2008 07:57 AM (GMT)
IMHO, EYE OF THE DEVIL isn't a bad film, but it's rather dull and quite predictable. The cast is good, including a young David Hemmings. I vaguely recall that the film may have been truncated in some way before release.

Jonathan Barnett - January 28, 2008 08:32 AM (GMT)
I have a weak subscription to Dish TV. I can’t afford many premiums as of now. So I’m digging one of the local UHF stations here in L.A. They have a slew of old time programs THE TWILIGHT ZONE, THE WILD, WILD WEST, MAGNUM P.I., and my favorite ELLERY QUEEN. Unfortunately they are always reshuffling their schedule. Even the website is not always gospel. But if you get KDOC as part of your cable package, give the station a chance.

http://www.kdoctv.net/fnf.htm

And they show plenty of monster movies on Saturday night. This is the only program that is consistent. Alas there is no Horror Host. Hmmm…. I wonder if they’re hiring?

“And about eight Charles Bronson movies for Cannon, as well as HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!”

Don’t forget THE AMBASSADOR with Robert Mitchum, Rock Hudson, Ellen Burstyn, and Fabio Testi !

Some upcoming films on TCM.

THE LONG DARK HALL (1951) with Rex Harrison. 03/05/08 1:30 pt

THE COLOSSUS OF RHODES (1961) peplum directed by Sergio Leone. 03/07/08 9pm pt

X FROM OUTER SPACE (1967) Japanese Sci Fi. 03/09/2008 11p pt.

MANIAC (1963) Hammer suspense w/ Kerwin Mathews 03/11/08 1:15 am pt

CABIN ON THE SKY (1943) Black musical directed by Vincent Minnelli. You know you have to see it! 03/22/08 7:15 pt

Per Lisa's suggestion, I looked up Fox Movie Channel and found they are showing something cool tomorrow. I'm jealous as I can't watch it! Sadly, the don't have February's schedule up yet.

1/29:

2:00pm - THE SALZBURG CONNECTION (Fox Movie Channel) - Difficult-to-find, this espionage thriller stars Barry Newman, Anna Karina, and Klaus Maria Brandauer in his first English role.

Don't get too excited. It’s a tedious, talky and ridiculously complicated Helen MacInnes thriller that's nothing like the exciting spy thriller Newman did based on Alistair MacLean's FEAR IS THE KEY.

If you have DirecTV and the Hi-Def Extra package (which they split from their other HD package just to charge another $6 a month - don't get me started), the MGM HD channel has been showing a lot of great stuff in HD. Coming this week:

Tuesday:
Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine
Killer Klowns From Outer Space

Wednesday:
Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
Zone Troopers

Thursday:
Soda Cracker (Fred Williamson, Maud Adams, Bo Svenson)

Friday:
Kansas City Confidential
The Lodger (silent Hitchcock - in HD!)

Saturday:
A whole buncha westerns, including Tomahawk Trail, Red River and Death Rides a Horse

Sunday:
Dance With Me Henry
The Adventures of Mark Twain (Will Vinton claymation)
Pauline at the Beach
It! The Terror From Beyond Space

Everything I've seen on MGM HD seems to be uncut and at the correct aspect ratio.

John Bernhard - January 30, 2008 06:18 PM (GMT)
While it did just come out on DVD, THE NAKED PREY has been pretty hard to see recently and it's greatness cannot be ignored. It's on TCM this Friday at 4 pm and comes highly recommended.
I think this is a great idea, between flat out missing things or reading about them only to space out down the road when the time comes, I can use all the help I can get. There is good stuff out there it just gets buried in the endless glut of programming ( or lost in the cobwebs of my brain ).

Marty McKee - January 30, 2008 07:41 PM (GMT)
To the best of my knowledge (and I've seen the film on TV many times), THE NAKED PREY has never been aired in its original aspect ratio. On the other hand, I don't think TCM has ever aired it either. TCM, as we know, is great about letterboxing movies, but sometimes a few slip through (THE OUTFIT, SKIDOO...).

Tim Lucas - January 30, 2008 08:26 PM (GMT)
Hmmm... considering that many of Dish Network's HD channels are now showing only two movies per day, AND they have seen fit to raise their prices (less for more -- what a great idea!), I may look into throwing them overboard in favor of this other service.

TCM, as we know, is great about letterboxing movies, but sometimes a few slip through (THE OUTFIT, SKIDOO...).

AMC, in the good old commercial-free days, sometimes used to air THE NAKED PREY letterboxed (usually after midnight, this would be in the mid/late 1990s), though the opening titles and end credits were strangely full-screen.

John Bernhard - January 30, 2008 09:09 PM (GMT)
Circa 1994 , AMC ran THE NAKED PREY a couple times. One Sunday night they ran a full screen, cut print at 8 pm ( which I caught part of ) and then at 11 pm an uncut widescreen version. AMC used to do this frequently during this time, offering viewers a pan/ scan or origianl ratio flavored option and sometimes the widescreen versions were new unexpected transfers / treats.
I am hoping TCM's 4 pm ( EST ) broadcast goes out unaltered...

WilWil, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I spend a few minutes every day zipping through the grid to check IFC, TCM and Sundance!

Bob Cashill - February 1, 2008 07:15 PM (GMT)
Looks like Sundance is re-airing the delightful SLINGS AND ARROWS again, with the very first episode scheduled for 3:35pm tomorrow afternoon. I'll not rest till more Mobians see it. Hey, it's got a ghost. :)

Scanning skeds, ALICE, SWEET ALICE and BLIND BEAST are on SHO-B this month, VICE SQUAD on SHO-E, and NIGHT OF THE CREEPS on TMC. You'll find detailed listings for all these channels (and Sundance) on Showtime's Programs A-Z list, which I find very easy to use.

Marty McKee - February 1, 2008 07:41 PM (GMT)
Can anyone recommend BLIND BEAST? The program listing makes it sound intriguing.

Bob Cashill - February 1, 2008 07:49 PM (GMT)
Mileage will vary on BLIND BEAST. More arty than tarty. But recommendable, and it seems to have taken up permanent residence on Showtime, along with the THREE NINJAS movies. :)

Once again, as I cruised the listings, few changes whatsoever on the IFC Channel. Such a waste. The schedule is set in stone with mid-90s indies, as if the programming staff had fossilized in 1997.

I take it back, sort of...IFC is airing THE HONEYMOON KILLERS tomorrow at 10am EST. A classic.

Lisa Larkin - February 4, 2008 02:37 AM (GMT)
Just noticed that WISE BLOOD is on Flix Saturday Feb. 9, 6pm PT. I've never managed to see this film and it's not available on DVD.

John Black - February 4, 2008 06:51 AM (GMT)
WISE BLOOD has been acquired by the Janus Film Library, and Criterion has mentioned preparing to release it on DVD. It's one of my ten favorite films.

William S. Wilson - February 8, 2008 04:09 PM (GMT)
Here is the latest posting for 2/10 - 2/16/08. It makes me cry looking up stuff on the Fox Movie Channel because they are showing some good stuff, but I don't get it. Other than that, enjoy!

Also, a quick word of warning - the Encore stations are airing a movie called PHASE IV. This is not the Saul Bass sci-fi film from the 70s, but a Dean Cain action vehicle from the 90s.

Not just Dean Cain, but also Brian Bosworth! When's the last time you saw two NCAA recordholders toplining in the same movie? (It's also a pretty good movie)

Not to be too picky, but...

THE CHICKEN CHRONICLES did get a VHS release, which is how I saw it last year (can't remember the label). LAND OF THE FREE got a DVD release from Madacy, I believe. It's sitting on my shelf at home. It's also not very good, but give it credit for giving Shatner a real acting role and not just something where he spoofs himself (even BOSTON LEGAL mostly does this).

OVERNIGHT is the most amazing case of self-destruction I've ever seen. Troy Duffy is one of the world's biggest jackasses. For all you young filmmakers out there (I'm in Steve Stone mode now), do exactly the opposite of everything Duffy does.

I'm looking forward to RETURN OF SISTER STREET FIGHTER!

4:05pm - LAND OF THE FREE (HBO Zone) - Jeff Speakman, William Shatner and Chris Lemmon star in this PM Entertainment production; still not on DVD and probably only appeals to me and Marty McKee.

Oh, it was on DVD, courtesy of Madacy. I made the mistake of buying a copy, albeit at a dollar store, thank goodness.

10:00am - RUNNIN' DOWN A DREAM (Sundance Channel) - Peter Bogdonavich's acclaimed documentary about Tom Petty; not available on DVD yet.

This has been out on DVD for several months. It's a Best Buy exclusive.

Thanks for the info guys. I was using the highly unreliable IMDb as my main source so that is what I get, although I did search THE CHICKEN CHRONICLES on eBay as well.

I'm really looking forward to burning myself a copy of Roland West's 1929 Alibi, showing 5am Tuesday on TCM. There was a Kino Video vhs ten years ago but it's not yet available on DVD. Sarris has good things to say about it in You Ain't Heard Nothin' Yet and if it's got the style of West's Bat movies I'm sure it'll be impressive.

ALIBI turned up on R1 DVD last year. You'll find it on Amazon.

Such a good sport, John, considering you Canadians don't get any of these channels, do you?

Thanks, I didn't see this. The IMDB page only links to the VHS.

A THOUSAND CLOWNS was out on MGM laserdisc, probably letterboxed. CHICKEN CHRONICLES was out on Columbia VHS. Despite my nitpicking, I really appreciate the list.

The FMC (Fox Movie Channel) is only available in a special package (at least, on my Comcast cable) that is otherwise comprised of sports channels only (which may explain why so few of us have it). Personally, I can't imagine why FMC is buried in a Fox sports package. I can't imagine that it specifically appeals to the sports freaks, and film people probably don't want to pay extra for a bunch of sports channels. I continue to scratch my head about that marketing decision.

Nope, we don't those channels here, though occasionally stations like Drive-In Classics, Scream. or Silver Screen Classics offer up some interesting titles (a lot of widescreen MGM transfers seem to turn up on Scream before playing on US channels).

Thanks for the ELI ACE...mention. I have been waitinng for FMC to run it again.
FMC does have some great programming but they are the WORST in adding new titles.
They run a very small selection over and over and over, year after year. Certain obscure ones like ELI ACE..or COVER ME BABE pop up less frequently and are easier to miss ( especially since they 'improved' their website schedule by making it less usefull ). :(

FYI: EQUINOX is also playing on Flix. Flix is part of the Showtime family so they sometimes play the same stuff and if your cable system is like mine, you might get it as part of your digital lineup.
