Miss Chicago 1948 and a veteran character actress understudied Barbara Bel Geddes in the original Broadway staging of CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF and had a bit part in Elia Kazan's A FACE IN THE CROWD in 1957. She co-starred in 1962's PERIOD OF ADJUSTMENT; subsequent film roles included COME FLY WITH ME, DIRTY DINGUS MAGEE with Frank Sinatra, THE MAN IN THE GLASS BOOTH with Robert Shaw, and 1982's DEADLY BLESSING, BUTTERFLY, and THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS, her final big screen credits. After that she concentrated on TV (she won two Daytime Emmys) and I assume the stage. She is perhaps best known to Mobians for her role in a 1961 episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE, "The Midnight Sun," and she appeared at conventions celebrating the show. In the 1960s she was married to CHRISTMAS STORY author Jean Shepherd; she had been a caller to his radio show.

It's PERIOD OF ADJUSTMENT that I'll always remember her for. It was on TCM not long ago and as usual, once I stumbled across it, I watched it through to the end. I had no idea she was married to Jean Shepherd.
