One of those ageless people I thought would be here forever! A peerless icon, and funny lady.

Apparently she was living here in North Hollywood with me and Criswell (who resides across the street from me in the Pierce Brothers Valhalla Cemetery). I never knew!

Oddly, I just watched SEPTEMBER 30, 1955 tonight, which has a scene with Lisa Blount decked out in Vampira garb while trying to communicate spiritually with the deceased James Dean. Maila Nurmi knew Dean in real life, I believe. Anyway, I watched the film, and then found the online news of her passing. Has anyone here seen the documentary VAMPIRA THE MOVIE?

The last I had heard of Maila Nurmi was in one of comedian Dana Gould's performances. Apparently, he tracked her down years ago and helped her get an apartment with the help of some Goth kids from a nearby mall. It's a hilarious, bittersweet story. Gould is a huge horror fan and it sounds like he really befriended her sometime during her final years. I'm not sure when the performance was recorded but I think it was within the past 10 years or so.

I always enjoyed Gould's hosting of AMC's MonsterFest back in the day; I had been wondering recently whatever happened to him.

Well, funny you should ask... Mr. Gould will be plying his trade at Meltdown Comics, in the second monthly Comedy Meltdown on January 25, nestled atop a line up of LA's finest stand ups, and free booze. Also, no cover. Which also means drunken comic book and action figure shopping. If you can find parking.

Not to shift too far off of Nurmi and onto Gould, but there's a pretty funny documentary called FIRED, about an actress who is fired by Woody Allen and begins collecting stories of firings from other actor friends. While Gould isn't in the film itself, there are a ton of extras, including a lengthy reading by Gould that's hilarious.

The story about Vampira is on one of the mp3 files that can be downloaded from Gould's official website.

As a side note, Gould was recently on Jimmy Kimmel (this past summer), and was there to talk about the live show LUCHA VA VOOM, which mixes lucha libre and burlesque. He's one of the MCs for the show, which is awesome, I might add. Gould was indeed Ms. Nurmi's benefactor over the last several years, and made sure that she had a roof over her head and food on her table.

If it's somehow possible for a dude to love another dude, I love Dana Gould.

I hesitate to tell you then, that Mr. Gould is not what anyone would consider 'tall'.

Hope this doesn't put the kibosh on your Gould canoodle, if you know what I mean.

If you move to Jersey you can get married!

The drawback, of course, is that you're in Jersey.
