Yeah, he's been
gettin' ornery of late.

Absolutely brilliant. The man doesn't mince his words, does he?
Mike Thomas - January 6, 2008 05:29 PM (GMT)
This made my day. Thanks!

But does he have to cuss so much? And smoke cigarettes too?
He's such a bad spokesperson for serious artists everywhere. :P

Wasn't there that funny rumor that Lynch refused to say any of the curse words in the BLUE VELVET script while directing THE FILM? I remember reading that if he was directing Hopper, he'd say, "Now when you say this word..." and wouldn't actually say the curse out loud. Seems like times have changed for Mr. Lynch :)

Didn't seem like dropping the f-bomb came easy for him... first he had to cough it up, then paused while he cleared the other words out of his mouth before he spat it out.

That's a great clip. I am inclined to strongly agree with what he said. It's convenient, especially on a long trip, to be able to watch a movie like that, but it's true that in NO way do you ever get to really experience it. Unless you have the rare ability to project yourself into a movie.

He writes profanity easily enough, but it's the first time I've heard him speak that way publicly. I think he was trying to speak to young people in a blunt, percussive way they might actually hear and appreciate.

Anyone who hasn't already done so should check out the behind the scenes documentary on the INLAND EMPIRE dvd. Any previous image you may have had of Lynch as a calm , cool, & (relatively) collected sort will be changed quite a bit.

That was beautiful...You know there are film festivals dedicated to portable devices?

Yeah, that was great. From almost the first moment, you see him looking as though he's about the chew out someone on the crew. Later on, he drops a few quiet f-bombs and they actually do seem to come naturally to him.
I was thinking about this the other day and trying to figure out which was the "real David Lynch": the gosh golly gee guy or the one who grumbles about the "f--ckin'" graffiti they found all over a needed wall in Poland. Naturally, I think the latter guy is the one who's been writing, directing and personally supervising all of those movies we've been getting into all these years. I do think that the Agent Cooper-like innocent of Lynch's earlier public image is also an aspect of himself, but it's more of a projection, not just of how he'd like to be seen but of who he sort of wishes he was (if that makes sense).
Of course, given the dense psychological imagery in Lynch's films, it's always been fun to submit him to dime-store psychology. But it's hard to do that as an adult and not remember Robin Williams reprimand of Matt Damon in GOOD WILL HUNTING:
"No one could possibly understand the depths of you. But you presume to know everything about me because you saw a painting of mine, and you ripped my f--king life apart."

There's a longtime Mobius member (not me) who now works for Lynch's company. From what I've heard, Lynch is amusingly blunt in private conversation and swears quite a bit.
