Title: Support Severin
Description: Lotsa Eurocult in 2008..
Anthony Thorne - December 28, 2007 10:28 PM (GMT)
Severin has just posted a large-ish end-of-year news update, which ends with the following
note:| QUOTE |
| 2008 is going to be a banner year for Severin. We're planning a dream roster for the eurocult fan, including the outrageous, the titillating, the gory, the gialli, and for the lucky few of that particular persuasion, more Franco. A marathon featurette shooting binge will take place in Europe in January/ February and then we'll start announcing our treasure trove of forthcoming gems right here so keep checking back. |
Hearing of the doco shooting spree is fun news, but as the DVD market continues to shrink and more and more of our favourite DVD companies count their sheckles and low sales and ponder how much longer they can continue to dig gems out of the vaults, I think 2008 will be an important year to put our money where our mouths are. Severin and others are digging more deeply into the vaults than ever before. I'd like to see this 'dream run' of Eurocult continue into 2009 and 2010. Please support Severin (and other companies like Synapse, Blue Underground, BCI and the like) with purchases that show them the Eurocult market is one to be supported. I've seen a number of signs in different places that the cult DVD market is a shaky one. None of us are made of money but, at the very least, I plan to budget accordingly next year and support these folks where I can. The crazy Eurocult DVD's may stop coming eventually, but not for a while, I hope.

SISTER OF URSULA, D'Amato's PAPAYA and Brescia's BEAST IN SPACE are all the next few releases. Well, URSULA's listed for March and the other two are future releases. Lets hope Severin slips in a few in January and February.

I'll go back to Europe and help shoot those docs, if they'd like. ;)
Ok, I'll buy the DVDs too...

rain, hail, sleet, snow and global warming - SEX SELLS! (or smells as the temperature rises!)

I have supported Severin in buying all but 3 of their releases - who needs a different version of Gwendoline, but a XXX version Emanuelle Around The World made sense. I have bought more than twenty titles (and a Blind Dead Boxset & Mondo Cane Boxset) from Blue Underground, but I can't think of anything else recently as thier will/well seems to have dried (no need to re-buy their Anchor Bay titles).
I had a wishlist including Faceless, Anthropophagus, Burial Ground, Demonia, Eaten Alive, Emanuelle And The Last Cannibals, Erotic Nights Of The Living Dead and many more which arrived on DVD via Media Blasters (and sub labels Shriek Show and Exploitation Digital), who although have taken my money do not always deliver the quality. Just for volume they still have to be one of my fave labels.
Who will champion such missing from DVD films as Borowczyk's Dr Jeckyll And His Women (Dutch VHS) & The Streetwalker/La Marge in English (UK VHS); D'Amato and Mattei's Emanuelle And The Porno Nights 1 & 2 (UK and Austrlian VHS respectively); The Humanoid with Corinne Clery, Richard Kiel and Barara Bach (Japan, UK and Australian VHS); D'Amato's Endgame & 2020 Texas Gladiators (Australian VHS); D'Amato's re-cut of Black Cobra Woman titled Porno Esotic Love - which someone round here tried to tell didn't exist, and that I was confused over one of D'Amato's Caribbean series (even though I had the Italian and Greek VHSs); more D'amato in The Pleasure Shop On 7th Avenue (UK and 2x Italian VHS versions); Just Jaekin's Madame Claude - in English (Australian VHS). Wow - there is more than I thought, and the list could go on further... Whether anyone at Severin (or otherwise) picks up these titles remains to be seen.

I'll support Severin when they replace my copy of The Psychic with a proper native NTSC transfer rather than a PAL to NTSC standards conversion (ditto for The Eroticist, although I don't personally own that title) and give assurances that this sort of thing won't be repeated.

Yeah, I'm not sure what was up there.

That's disappointing to hear. Their quality has usually been pretty good.
Myself, I'd like to see them dip into the Franco hard core porn. :P
Eric Cotenas - January 2, 2008 11:04 PM (GMT)
I'm hoping Severin will put out BRUTAL NIGHTS OF LINDA (the non-HC Spanish and English versions play better than the French version but I like the French release title - the English title is a literal translation of the film's orginal French title, itself seen onscreen as the last shot).
Danny Shipka - January 3, 2008 03:31 PM (GMT)
It would also be nice to see them get the rights to release some of the Radley Metzger classics. Severin and Metzger sounds like a perfect combination!

The French title Les Nuits brûlantes de Linda translates to THE HOT NIGHTS OF LINDA or LINDA'S HOT NIGHTS.
brûlantes mean hot or Burning, not brutal.
The other Frenc tiutle is Mais qui donc a violé Linda? (plaisir solitaire) which translates to BUT WHO RAPED LINDA? (SOLITARY PLEASURE).

Yeah - somebody's gotta get Metzger done right.
DON?!
Marc Morris - January 3, 2008 06:19 PM (GMT)
The Metzger titles would be great -however, all are in need of brand new masters which is a costly affair, and would depend on how many discs any company considering the could expect to sell.
I'd get them for sure!

Yep. I've absolutely no interest in seeing those old masters re-purposed, even with a million extras appended.
Those movies need help. I wanna see CAMILLE 2000 looking like ...AND GOD CREATED WOMAN.

Hence, Crème Brûlée (literally translated "Burnt Cream"), my favorite desert.
According to wikipedia CB consists of:
"a rich custard base topped with a layer of hard caramel, created by burning sugar under a grill, blowtorch or other intense heat source. It is usually served cold in individual ramekins."
Eric Cotenas - January 3, 2008 11:18 PM (GMT)
I still think BRUTAL NIGHTS would be a more eye-catching title even if the version is the superior soft version.

LICKERISH QUARTET, too. Also, THE ALLEY CATS should look like L'ECLISSE.
Anthony Thorne - January 4, 2008 01:27 PM (GMT)
I agree with all the requests in this thread and hope that some of them come to fruition. (I understand that Andrew's plea for PLEASURE SHOP ON 7TH AVENUE might be answered sooner rather than later).
I'm going to have to give that Crème Brûlée a go.

Well, we just remastered THE IMAGE in HD with a 5.1 surround track. We'll be releasing the new DVD in 2008. Most people thought our earlier DVD of THE IMAGE was outstanding... but wait until you see it NOW!
I am awaiting a final check DVD for THE IMAGE audio (the original tracks will all still be present, BTW). More details to come on that one...

Dang - speak of the Don, you get the scoop!
Hate to push my luck, but I can only imagine you've at least *tested* the waters on the possibility of releasing other Metzgers... right?
Danny Shipka - January 5, 2008 05:20 AM (GMT)
Don, I'm looking forward to the HD release of The Image. One question, are you planning on offering it in Blu-Ray or HD-DVD (or both)? I own both formats so regardless it'll definitely be in my collection!
Michael Mackenzie - January 5, 2008 07:35 PM (GMT)
I'd like to apologise for describing
The Psychic as a standards conversion. There is a lot wrong with this disc, but it's more complicated than a straight forward case of a bad PAL -> NTSC job. If anyone's interested, I would invite them to read what my brother, who has first hand experience with DVD encoding, has to say about the disc:
