Title: Coming for Christmas: SWEENEY TODD

Bob Gutowski - November 30, 2007 03:52 PM (GMT)
I spent over an hour watching the streamed clips available at various sites, and the thing certainly looks amazing. There's a moment in Sweeney's room when Burton cuts to a long shot, and with the pitched roof and the stylized hair and make-up of Depp and Bonham-Carter it look like a lost piece of CALIGARI.

The like of this from Tim Burton?! The hell you say! :P

No - REALLY TRULY (you smartass)!

Actually, the moment first hit me as more BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN - but then, whence the BRIDE?

Do the actors actually, like, sing in these clips? <_< Not that I wish to scare off the hoi polloi...

I"m sure with his extreme art direction and great vocalists like Helena Bonham Carter, Johnny Depp, and Sascha Baron Cohen, Burton will be able to make us all forget that this was ever a work of musical theater.

Here is the link to the official site, for starters.

A skeptical Jeffrey Wells pretty much raves about it.

"Raves" being the operative word with most things concerning Wells. As in, with spittle and foam.

'Tis true, on and off his soapbox (shall we say a difficult person). But he had pretty much my same concerns going in so I'll give him some credence, this time.

Is that what Depp is doing there? Singing? :P

Hilarious! For a review of "finest big-time movie musical since the under-appreciated Evita" Wells neatly avoids talking about the quality of anyone's singing outside noting that Bonham Carter's singing is lousy. Neither does he make mention of any specific songs.

Here are some excerpts from reviews that will definitely make Das Bob happy.

Also, it has been revealed the film features a shot of Big Ben, 50 years before it was built. D'OH!

According to Amazon, my copy of THE MAKING OF SWEENEY TODD, or whatever the heck it's called, will arrive Monday. It's such a blast to be sitting at home, half-watching TV, with a book in my lap and the cat nestled next to me, when music that's tattooed on my brain suddenly pours from the set in a 30-second ad for SWEENEY.

WilWil, my brother came from North Carolina for my birthday party Saturday night, and I told him about the "Das Bob" appelation!
