Title: Shriek Show and GOLDEN TEMPLE AMAZONS - bad news
Description: two incredible mistakes on the DVD cover
Francesco Cesari - January 7, 2005 08:48 PM (GMT)
Both the coming DVD cover and the Media Blasters link credit Alice Arno, William Berger and Lina Romay. They get 1 on 3, since Berger indeed plays in this film. But Alice Arno's carreer finished many years earlier and, as for Lina Romay, she has an one second long walking-part .... I don't think they noticed this.
At this point, I wonder if they view the films before releasing them and if they have some basic knowledges in the Euro-Cult field.
However, the really bad news regard both the coming Franco discs. According to Media Blaster ....
AMAZONSKILIMANDJARO... GOLDEN TEMPLE AMAZONS and DIAMONDS OF KILIMANDJARO will have English track only.

Well, it looks like they copied the IMDB info for the film:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070118/combinedAnd according to IMDB, both Alice and Lina have big parts in the film. Pretty crazy! I've never seen the film, but would have bought the disc for those two beauties alone. Looks like this will either be another SAPPHO 68 snafu (that one had Uschi on the cover, no Uschi in the film)....or you've got the wrong film.....? Really confused here...! Plus if the film is really from 1973, you'd be wrong, Francesco. Alice Arno made several films after this time and only retired in the late 70s. William Berger isn't credited on this one, either. But he is credited in this one:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0165621/combinedHas it been clarified which Franco film is being released? The 1973 film is AMAZON GOLDEN TEMPLE and the 1990 film is AMAZONS IN THE TEMPLE OF GOLD, but is also credited to a Alain Payet.
As regards the language issue, licensors don't always offer both language tracks when a film is bought by a US distributor. Still, Shriek Show had a recent trend of including double language tracks with some of their films, so...
Francesco Cesari - January 8, 2005 10:05 AM (GMT)
GOLDEN TEMPLE AMAZONS is the 1985 Eurociné film shot by Franco and finished by Alain Payet. And, unfortunately, this is the film released on DVD. The 1973 film has many titles but not this one. It's far superior and, yes, casts both Alice Arno and Lina Romay. It has a totally different story which involves Maciste.
I think you are right, Casey. They found the wrong film, and consequently the wrong credits, on IMDB. Then, they added the name of William Berger.
But this is not professional. A DVD company cannot credit the actors by searching them on IMDB. Come on! And if one thinks how many Euro-cult experts they could have contacted...
At this point I wonder if the DVD includes liner notes and what film they talk about.
Let's hope the one-language-only information is wrong. The main problem regards the other title, since the original Spanish version (EL TESORO DE LA DIOSA BLANCA) is different.

Damn! Shriek Show's batting average takes another dip!
These guys seriously must own the record for the number of easily avoidable F*** ups since the dawn off the DVD era. Sure every company makes an honest error here and there but their record stands alone at the top of the pack.
They are the company you love to hate.
Love 'em cuz they license terrific titles.
Hate 'em for their seemingly inexhaustable string of blunders.
I mean if make a post that has bad facts in it, it's no big deal and someone always chips in with a ( much appreciated ) correction. Problem solved and no one lost any money.

I can live with cast screw ups on the cover slick if the film itself is presented in a relatively glitch-free manner. By 'glitch free' I mean that that the disc shouldn't suffer from any technical issues, the sort of which would cause another company to recall and re-press the disc, simply as there's probably a 5% chance the company will rectify the issue. I've scratched VIRGIN OF NUREMBERG off my purchase list, and that's entirely their fault, not mine, given that their release of VIRGIN has a basic editorial assembly issue similar to the one VCI suffered with their BIRD release, but one that (unlike VCI) will probably never be rectified. (Just to point out too that if a small company like VCI can re-author a Eurocult disc to fix errors more than a few years ago back when replication costs were likely higher, but Shriek can only run and giggle and make encouraging posts on a few web boards - although John Sirabella's passive-aggressive needling of the fans with unkept promises to 'look into' several of their quality control issues has rightfully stopped after he basically did nothing to address issue after issue for more than a year [Bob Monell, who helped out on one of their discs, is still waiting for a watchable copy of a Rollin film to be returned to him in the post] - you have to suspect that the actions of the company are what gives ample evidence of where their priorities lie). I still won't be buying any Shriek Show titles sight unseen at any point in the future until I've read a handful of threads and reviews on the disc in question that indicate the release is error-free. Their ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK DVD is a good one and I've heard (among recent titles) decent word about EATEN ALIVE and MAN FROM DEEP RIVER, but there's still no way I'll ever trust this company enough to buy one of their titles blind. Of course, what that also means is that titles that may have been an immediate purchase get put on the 'to buy later' list, and then remain there as newer and more immediately appealing discs from other companies pop up. Better safe than sorry, eh, John?

Actually, I helped them out on 2 discs: writing the Joe D'Amato bio for BEYOND THE DARKNESS and did the liners for KILLER BARBYS. Unfortunately I never managed to even get comp copies which were promised for my work. Not even after emailing them many times! I also attempted to get them correct information on what would constitue a director's edition of SLAUGHTER HOTEL, but this was never followed up on. Then there are several replacements of defective discs which I've never gotten. I've basically given up waiting for all this material. I do think, to be fair, they've gotten better in terms of quality control and they continue to release rare, exciting titles. A huge mistake was their treatment of Kit Gavin, who is probably the leading expert on Italian genre films and the people who made and appeared in them. He managed to locate and interview key technical people and actors no one else would be able to access. I only hope they don't mess with his definitive documentary SHEDDING THE SKIN, which should be the key extra on their upcoming A LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN. He was an invaluable asset to them and would be to any DVD company. Thanks, Anthony, and here's hoping they do LIZARD correctly.

It's dismaying there are so many problems, technical and public relations-wise, with this company. I think there is a desire on the part of SS/MB to do the right thing with these releases, god knows it's not exactly the genre you go to to make a fortune, but there seems to be a disconnect between their intent and their follow-through. The past few days in multiple threads concerning their releases there seems to be a bit of a pile-on of abuse(deserved or not), and I don't want to add any more to that, but does anyone know why these mistakes occur? Or how they could occur? Is it just that they're understaffed? Lack of financing?
Anthony Thorne - January 9, 2005 04:54 AM (GMT)
Shriek Show have so many defective discs that I've mixed a couple up in my last post. It's SLAUGHTER HOTEL that has the editorial assembly issue - VIRGIN OF NUREMBERG is a title where even the recent Video Watchdog review of it cites how the film breaks up and glitches midway, and how they couldn't find a correctly working copy of the disc even after trying multiple copes. NIGHTMARES COME AT NIGHT purportedly has trouble with the layer-change on some players. That's three recent titles that I would have bought but likely won't. If John Sirabella was even bothering to reply to threads like this these days I'd love to hear his justification for not sending Bob Monell comp copies for his work.
The 'Why do they do this?' line has been run into the ground across numerous threads, among numerous boards, and I'm as guilty as anybody of repeating the same few points. Suffice to say though that Synapse apparently don't have a massive staff (I gather it's just a few people), but never seem to have any quality control issues - in fact I can't think of any issues with Synapse's output at all. VCI seems to be a similarly lower-budgeted company and yet they still managed to redo BIRD after their original disc of that suffered a couple of glitches. Shriek Show know that many fans will buy the discs automatically if the A/V is okay, and buyers who aren't aware of the A/V issues likely pick up enough of the problematic releases for SS to be happy enough with the sales not to bother with a repressing. The few of us that feel irked by their occasionally shoddy work get to take some mild revenge by skipping the discs that they screw up on, and that in mind I've prioritised BU's ZOMBIE over SS's, despite the load of extras on the latter.

Casey Scott's deleted post had a very good point. How come John S. canot use this board to explain himself?
Deleting posts and banning posters?
What gives?
Marty McKee - January 9, 2005 09:52 PM (GMT)
Casey deleted his post himself; you'll have to ask him why (off-board, please). And to the best of my knowledge, John Sirabella has not been "banned"; please don't jump to any conclusions. Thanks to Shriek Show for the following titles:
THE OTHER HELL
BEYOND THE DARKNESS
ZOMBI 4
MANGIATI VIVI
EROTIC NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
JUNGLE HOLOCAUST
DELIRIUM
SPASMO
7 BLOOD-STAINED ORCHIDS
All of the above seem to be alright, I didn't notice any problems while watching them.
Shame on Shriek Show for the following:
ZOMBI 3
SLAUGHTER HOTEL
WEREWOLF WOMAN
These 3 were major 2 let-downs by a company that I used to trust. However the most shameful is probably ZOMBI 3 with the gory scenes that are mastered from VHS. I still cannot believe this. I forgive them because their non-defective discs are more than the defective ones and also because they release stuff that other companies neglect.
Believe it or not, once I used to think of SS as a seal of quality when it comes to Euro-cult. SS was alwaya guaranteed to offer cast/crue interviews (this was the main reason for me buying the discs) + a nice widescreen print. Let's hope that they will return to their glorious days with THE BEAST IN HEAT disc. No extras this time (I think I know the reason why) but I really hope that the print will be free of any defects. Come on wake up Shriek Show, you can do better than this!

John, please get your facts straight before flinging accusations.
I checked our admin log, and user CASEY SCOTT deleted his post, not us. Copied straight from our log:

John Sirabella has a user account at this forum and is welcome to use it at his convenience. But he's not obligated to respond to anyone.
No one has ever been banned from this forum for expressing an opinion, pro or con, about any DVD company, as long as our posting policy has been followed. If you're referring to Walter Olsen, an explanation of his situation has been posted in Sci-Fi, Horror & Fantastic Cinema.
All this bickering and hysteria over genre DVD releases, and these absolutely false allusions that we're doing anything behind the scenes to manipulate it (are people really that cynical?), is extremely frustrating. These threads have been nothing but colossal headaches for us and, quite frankly, we've had enough and are ready to move on.
