Secondly, the rumored plot details to JJ Abrahms STAR TREK have been leaked. Obviously there will be MASSIVE SPOILERS here so don't read any further if you don't want to know anything.

SPOILERS

Romulans from the future, most likely TNG time frame lead by a Romulan named Nero, played by Eric Bana, finds the City on the Edge of Forever and uses the Guardian of Forever to go back in time and kill the person who has been the biggest thorn in the Romulan’s side and is crucial to the success of the Federation and Starfleet, James T. Kirk.

Mr. Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy in the original timeline, becomes aware of Nero’s plan (not clear on the details of how he knows) and also goes back in time to protect his best friend, James Kirk. This is where the Old Spock (Nimoy) and Young Spock (Quinto) meet.

Old Spock warns young Spock about Nero’s plans and it’s up to them to protect the future Captain Kirk and also help try to protect the timeline and the future of the Federation and Starfleet.

This happens before Kirk and Spock form their life long friendship and bond. We have been told that there is a very cool scene where Old Spock tells the Young Spock about his friendship with Kirk, so while this may sound “illogical” (pun intended) it’s been described as very emotional.

Believe it or not, I think this is a fantastic idea on how to revive the STAR TREK formula. You know they wanted to go back with younger actors to keep it alive, but this keeps everything in the STAR TREK canon and isn't a remake. Plus, they are incorporating one of the original series most treasured concepts.

Naturally, this has Harlan Ellison all grumpy and he is demanding payment for his ideas. Imagine that. :)

Kind of Terminator-ish but sounds passable.

I'd prefer Shatner went back in time, so young Shatner could be warned to lay off the food replicator.

Well, to be fair, THE TERMINATOR owes a lot to Ellison's work from THE OUTER LIMITS. Plus, in the original TREK episode, they go back in time to stop the death of a woman (Joan Collins) who was a future leader.

I'm not a Trekkie by any stretch of the imagination, but I grew up watching the original series every weeknight night at 6:00 pm, and in the Joan Collins episode, Spock and Kirk go back to retrieve McCoy, who has inadvertently altered the future, and the come to the conclusion that Collins' character must die so that American enters WW2 and crushes the ambitions of Adolph Hitler.

"...But I swear I'm not a Trekkie!"

One of us! One of us!

This sounds like a horrible idea--hasn't TREK done enough time-travel stories by now? And is James Kirk really the Romulans' biggest thorn? Even years after his death (if the film is set in the TNG years)? And does Eric Bana really have the gravitas to mix it up with James Kirk? OK, since Kirk is being played by an Abercrombie & Fitch model, he probably does.

I have to admit--I'm a big naysayer when it comes to this movie, so it's really going to have to be crackling good to get me to warm up to it. A director other than Abrams (who hopefully knows more about STAR TREK than he does Superman) and writers who didn't script TRANSFORMERS would have helped. Quinto does look good in the photos, at least.

Ellison claims to own the concept and non-TREK characters in "City on the Edge of Forever," but I don't know how this could be true. As a writer for hire, wouldn't Paramount own it all? I know he won the suit against James Cameron, but I'm surprised there haven't been hundreds of TV writers filing suits against producers who have used similar ideas.

The one thing I've heard about this project that really makes my head spin is the casting of Spock's mother. I know it ain't April 1st and Alan Funt isn't directing the new movie, so I don't know what to think...

...WINONA RYDER?!?

As long as she's still human. Variety is listing her as a Vulcan(!).

Problem I see is this may be alright for a one shot movie, or better yet it would have been o'kay as an episode of one of the previous shows, but how is this supposed to relaunch things? Are we now going to see further adventures with this cast? And I'm sorry but the actor playing Spock doesn't look like Leonard Nimoy. He looks more like Eli Roth in real life, and just another Vulcan in those shots.
