Deimos has also set a January 22 debut for its next two Paul Naschy DVDs, BLUE EYES OF THE BROKEN DOLL (a.k.a. HOUSE OF PSYCHOTIC WOMEN) and HUMAN BEASTS (details to come), and will release its first Naschy Blu-ray disc, a double feature of NIGHT OF THE WEREWOLF and VENGEANCE OF THE ZOMBIES, on January 8.

...first Naschy Blu-ray disc, a double feature of NIGHT OF THE WEREWOLF and VENGEANCE OF THE ZOMBIES...

Wonder if they'll matte VENGEANCE for 1.66 or 1.78 this time. Doubt it.

I hope that they just don't slap the same masters/transfer used for the standard def releases on this BluRay release. I wonder why they are putting two titles on one BluRay if these are true Hi-Def masters and not standard def transfers?

They're Hi-Def masters - and fresh. That's not in and of itself a problem (VENGEANCE is plainly an open-matte rendering of a widescreen film, though. And that, to me, is a bit of a problem - purely compositionally though, as HD isn't an anamorphic format that's counting on the extra lines of resolution like DVD is).

Blu-ray can handle two shortish feature length films in full, 1080p resolution on one disc, with limited extras in Standard Def. So can HD DVD, though it's a little tight for anything but the dual-layer renderings.

That's what I was wondering. Is there a dual layer BluRay format? How well do DVD players handle the layer change compared to standard definition DVD players (that unfortunate layer change on Anchor Bay's loaded disc of THE BEYOND still gets to me - BTW, do professional encoders allow you to choose where the layer change happens)?

Even on single layer, it wouldn't make sense to use the SD downconversions since that would add up to only about 12-13 GB.

Yeah - 50GB.

And I brain-farted on HD DVD - there's a triple-layer configuration that would hold 51GB, but it hasn't been implemented yet, so HD DVD would have a problem with this double feature. Their dual-layer disc is 30GB.

Glad to hear that the masters are HiDef ready and your right there is more then enough space to fit both films I am just wondering why a double feature instead of stand alone releases. Anyway if they use a dual layer 50gb BluRay for this double feature then I will be happy with the end results. I am just worried that they might try to put both films on a single layer BluRay 25gb which is still an improvement space wise over their current standard Def releases. Lets hope that this release leads to more cult film labels releasing film in HiDef on BluRay or HD DVD.

On the handful of dual BluRay’s that I have seen the layer transition was so smooth you might not even notice it.
