Wow, this is great news, Ian. Thanks for the heads up! The Naschy films seem to rise in my esteem every time newer and better video releases appear. They have a moody elegance and lovely color design that was invisible to us for many years.

Can't wait for the HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB commentary. The widescreen framing also lends some composition to Manuel Merino's photography (which seems rather ordinary in the cropped version).

If the transfer of NIGHT OF THE SORCERERS is anything to go by then the night scenes of LORELEY'S GRASP should look much more clearer than the okay-looking Lightning tape or the overly dark Dutch VHS. Hopefully they include the red warning flash versions of the gore scenes as an extra.

I'm going to ask something that I'm pretty sure I ask every time more Naschy titles are announced, but... with all these Naschy films getting dusted off for release, does anyone know if there's a chance of seeing The People Who Own the Dark any time soon?

Eric Cotenas - November 14, 2007 03:01 PM (GMT)
LORELEY'S GRASP looks great except for the Rhine stock footage. The extras are a still gallery, a trailer (its not noted anywhere but there are Spanish and English audio tracks for the trailer and English subtitles) that calls the film THE CLAWS OF LORELEI though it has the onscreen title THE LORELEY'S GRASP, and the Spanish opening and end credits (its too bad they didn't include the red warning versions of the gore scenes from the US release).

HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB includes clothed takes, some outtakes of Helga Line's whipping, a trailer with the HORROR title but the narrator calls it FEAR RISES FROM THE TOMB, still gallery, introduction by Naschy and a subtitled commentary with Naschy and director Carlos Aured. The 1.85:1 framing makes a difference (like LORELEY, its a hardmatted film).

These releases strike me as the best of the bunch out of BCI so far. Both films look incredible, the extras are very nice ( especially the commentary from Naschy & Aured on HRFTT ). They can be had as a double feature available at Best Buy, and they have dropped the price to 17.99, which make this a Euro Horror bargain not to be missed.
The BB double sets have been coming up short on the liner notes though, some sets have HORROR liners and no LORELEY, or vice versa. BCI is on the case and there will be an email address forthcoming this week that will get people their MIA materials ( I am missing LORELEY liners myself ).
I was thrilled to see LORELEY without those red flashes, I never realized how much they hurt the film's overall mood until I saw it without them.

re: PEOPLE WHO OWN THE DARK...it's one of the best Spanish Sci Fi flicks and maybe someday we'll see it get some respect. It is not part of the current BCI release lineup, nor is it included in the potential second series of BCI Spanish horror that may follow in 2008. It's one of several Naschy titles that are held by other licensors.
