Variety has reported that Lust, Caution will likely be cut for Hong Kong, too:

In Hong Kong, a Chinese Special Administrative Region where the pic is to be given a wide 50-print release by Edko Films on Sept 26, "Lust" is also likely to be sliced. "We are still waiting for the advice of the ratings board," said an Edko source. "But it seems pretty clear that we are heading for cuts in order to qualify for a III rating."

Just read from HK "Oriental Daily" and it says "Lust, Caution" has got permission to be shown uncut in Hong Kong, listed as "grade three". It will be shown in Taiwan uncut too. Hong Kong's release date is September 26.

LMF Dean verified Jane's translation of the news in Oriental Daily:-

Wonder how long the mainstream English language media will take to pick up this piece of news -- as opposed to the older one about LUST, CAUTION getting cut in both Mainland China and Hong Kong. Also wonder what will happen to the film in Malaysia (where it was partly shot!). -_-

One last point: "grade 3" in Jane's post can be translated to the more familiar "category III".

I wish he had cut 30 minutes from the US release...leave the NC-17 content but shear off 30 of the slower minutes...short stories/novellas that become 157-minute films could usually use a little off the top, and this is no exception.

Left: Zheng Pingru, a Kuomintang intelligence agent during World War II, served as the archetype of Lust, Caution. Killed at age 23.
Right: the leading actress Tang Wei (note: Tang is the family name) in Lust, Caution

Regarding the "real story", that claim appears to be unsubstantiated. Documents explaining the real real story have been posted online by Roland Soong, administrator of Eileen Chang's literary estate, on his always enlightening ESWN website, here.
