I don't see him mentioned around here much, but the Five-O thread made me think of CBS' other famous Hawaii sleuth. Magnum P.I. is nearing completion on DVD--Season 7 (out of 8) is due in October. Unfortunately, there's been nothing in the way of meaningful supplements on any of the DVDs with cast & crew.
In the meantime, it seems that the long-rumored, on-again-off-again film is still moving forward even after the lead has been rejected by the likes of George Clooney, Ben Affleck, and Matthew McConaughey. Ricky Gervais has already said no to Majordomo Higgins. Maybe these guys know that no one wants to see anyone, but Selleck in this role. The latest story has Nicolas Cage playing Magnum.
The one certainty is that the film will be directed by Dodgeball director Rawson Marshall Thurber (currently working on Michael Chabon's Mysteries of Pittsburgh).
At this point is there really any reason why Selleck can't play the role one more time? As others have mentioned, Harrison Ford (who is older) is still playing Indiana Jones, a part, which incidentally, originally belonged to Selleck.

It would be a nice way to go against the grain when it comes to doing a movie based on a television show these days - a straight non-parody that's a continuation of the character with the actor that was known for the role on television playing the part.
I mean, beyond the original "Star Trek" series - and that was over nearly twenty years ago now - who else has done it recently? Even the subsequent "Next Generation" films were more parody than functioning continuations.

I'm willing to bet that the MAGNUM movie with Nicolas Cage never gets made. It's such a colossally stupid idea. Cage would have been a better Superman than a Magnum, and he would have been a terrible Superman. The idea of a MAGNUM, P.I. film has been floating around almost since the series went off the air. I think it actually lends itself well to a follow-up, since the characters were so vivid, and bringing back the original cast is a great idea. Too great for Hollywood, obviously.

I really do hope that this one never gets out of development, but it just won't die...now, it's to the point that Selleck is said to have nothing to do with this project (there were talks of a cameo) and has actually spoken out against it.
The sad part is that CBS wanted to do a series of 2-hour television films in the first years that the show went off the air. However, Selleck and the rest of the cast insisted on a feature-film sequel, which at one time was being developed by Selleck pal Tom Clancy. The way Selleck tells it Universal was interested until the company was bought out by Matsushita in the early 90s and the new regime had little to no interest in the Magnum project. It may have come up as a possibility one more time, but nothing serious.
I think most people who were/are fans of the show would love to have had those telefilms, which seem pretty good in hindsight.

Absolutely, at this point I bet Selleck would be more than happy to do a series of telefilms, especially with the success he's having in the Robert Parker telefilms (is the characters' name Josh Stone or something? I haven't seen them)...I don't think MAGNUM as a title would have ANY pull at this point with Restless Youth, any more than MOD SQUAD did a near decade ago...no doubt, a film with Colin Farrell and Hawaiian locations might be "sellable" but it seems the moment for Magnum has passed as a big-budget feature, even with Selleck (which I would go see, but he was never anywhere near the big star as Harrison Ford was/is, so I don't think Selleck at 60 would necessarily draw any business).
But even one tv movie would be a good start....
