Title: PEKING OPERA BLUES query
Grady Hendrix - September 2, 2007 05:40 PM (GMT)
Just a quick question: does the new PEKING OPERA BLUES DVD have the titles at the end of the film that describe what happens to China after the movie concludes, or is it still missing these? I've never owned a DVD of this movie because these titles have been missing so I'd love to know if they're back.

Hey long time no see.
Nope, still no love in that regard. Here's a couple of pics of the last couple of shots of the movie, one of which is where I presume the text would be, if it were there at all.

I think the subs are a bit better than the one's on the deltamac disc. The picture on the Joy/Fortune disc is certainly the best of any copy I've seen. The lack of the...epilogue I guess, is regrettable, and I'm just as much a purist as anyone else here (more or less), but sometimes you gotta eat what's in front of you and hope that next time they'll
finally get it right.

Ian Friedman's earlier thread outlined a copy with the text but I'm still not clear on the story behind this issue. I presume it's a censorship change rather than directorial one. If someone could post the text (I can't make it out from Ian's screenshots), I'd settle for printing an insert card to put in the DVD keepcase of the otherwise fine Joy/Fortune release.

Thus the Chinese Democratic Revolution
Began All Over Again.
Sorry, I don't know the background.

Grady, here's the link for the new HD version of the film from off of Kung Fu HD, you'll see it now does have the English text.

It's coming on Kung Fu HD in 25 minutes (8:25 AM, EST), so I'll be taping it. Thanks for the heads-up.

If you guys want I can try and take some new caps today. My camera was being a bit of a pain in the ass last time. Maybe then I can get a link from Kaiju Shakedown! Interestingly my copy lacks any Chinese for the end credits and credits the English version as being from Studio Lipsync.

Thanks for all the responses. I really have a hard time understanding this issue. It has to be technical, I can't imagine that it's censorship, especially with movies like ELECTION 2 coming out that take such a hard-line anti-Mainland stance.
