I haven't been this impressed by a trailer in a long time. The fact that it is shot through the pov of a video camera gives it a very realistic feel. Whether or not the film is going to be any good who ever cut that trailer should be applauded.

I wonder if we'll see much mention of how Shusuke Kaneko invented the "kaiju monster caught on handheld video cam" shot over 10 years ago for the Gamera series.

August Ragone - August 22, 2007 07:40 AM (GMT)
Quite right. But most of the shots involving Gamera caught on home video was conceived and executed by visual effects director Shinji Higuchi in GAMERA 3, who has since gone on to become a director himself (LORELEI, SINKING OF JAPAN).

You can see a long clip from CLOVERFIELD at AICN here:

Sadly, this doesn't look very good. The use of the POV camera is forced and the acting is really, really terrible. And is there a term to use for 9/11 imagery exploitation?

Some of those shots are exact replicas of footage seen on 9/11. Although it's a bit disturbing, being a native New Yorker, I don't find myself offended by it like Uwe Boll's parody of the plane ride into one of the World Trade Center buildings.

I agree the acting looks rather horrible, but I still want to see this thing.

Try as I might, it's hard to get excited about a January release. Touchstone had some luck with the slot with its Bette Midler hits 20 years ago, but it's mostly a dead zone dumping ground anymore. If I were a filmmaker and a studio told me my movie was going up in January I'd know exactly what they felt about its prospects and/or quality. Same for February. The weather doesn't really clear till March; curiously, April is usually another off month. I know there are examples to the contrary but really I'd only know the coast was clear if I landed a May-July or Nov.-Dec. slot. :)

And that's too bad, as so many months are pegged as useless or undesirable by the majors. The moviegoing habit diminishes, and with other entertainment options available it's small wonder audience sizes are shrinking.

Wiggly camera may look annoying, but I will show up with bells on for anything penned by top-shelf BUFFY/ANGEL scribe Drew Goddard.
