Masato Harada's Môryô no hako is based on the eponymous novel by Natsuhiko Kyôgoku, which is the second novel in the Kyôgokudô series. The late Akio Jissôji's Ubume no natsu (2005) was based on the eponymous first novel in that series.

Môryô no hako stars Shin'ichi Tsutsumi as Akihiko Chûzenji, a.k.a. 'Kyôgokudô'. It co-stars (listed order corresponds to order on official website) Hiroshi Abe, Kippei Shiina, Hiroyuki Miyasako, Rena Tanaka, Hitomi Kuroki, Magy (Magî), Keisuke Horibe, Yoshiyoshi Arakawa, Takashi Sasano, Hiroshi Ômori, Mikio Ôsawa, Ken'ichi Ukon, Saki Terashima, Mitsuki Tanimura, Misa Shimizu, Ryôko Shinohara, Kankurô Kudô, and Akira Emoto.

Here's a synopsis for Môryô no hako from Cinema Topics Online via Ryuganji: "In post-war Tokyo, the mutilated corpses of beautiful girls are being found one after another, stuffed into boxes. Are they connected to a strange psychic who offers prayers to the boxes, and a huge, mysterious box-shaped building? Then the daughter of former actress Yuzuki Yoko (Kuroki) goes missing... Private detective Enokizu (Abe), writer Sekiguchi (Shiina) and policeman Kiba (Miyasako) enlist the aid of Kyogokudo (Tsutsumi). Can he defeat the evil entity responsible?"

Showgate Inc. - formerly Toshiba Entertainment Inc. - is scheduled to release Môryô no hako theatrically in Japan on December 22nd.

The international sales title of Môryô no hako is "The Shadow Spirit". Here's a description of the movie from the international sales agent for it, Geneon Entertainment Inc.: "Tokyo, 1952. A series of murders targeting only beautiful young women has occurred. When retired actress Yoko's daughter vanishes, Enokizu - a private detective with a supernatural ability to see the memories of others - tries to track her down. At the same time, writer Sekiguchi and editor Atsuko investigate a mysterious religious cult, while police detective Kiba follows a lead to a strange, enormous box-shaped building. The characters eventually gather at the antiquarian bookstore Kyogokudo to seek help from its owner, Chuzenji - a practitioner of Onmyodo who possesses esoteric powers of protection against evil spirits. The horrifying enigma of the box, which ties everything together, will draw you into a world of fast-paced suspense."
