Title: LOST creator Jeffrey Lieber
Description: Who?

I enjoyed this Chicago Magazine piece on Jeffrey Lieber, the original creator of LOST before ABC ripped it away from him and handed it to J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof. I'm no fan of the current series, and I wonder what it would have been like under Lieber's vision.

Having read the piece in its entirety, I'm reminded of the immortal words of Livia Soprano: "POOR YOU!" :P

When I first heard about LOST, I thought ABC was digging into it's archives and remaking
LOST FLIGHT, their movie of the week from the late 60's/early 70's. What makes the new series stand out IS the supernatural element... it's a great Shaggy Dog story, maybe the best one ever on network TV.
Maybe Lieber's right to feel ashamed.

With all the shark-jumping and accusations of outrageous plot turns seemingly designed to extend this baby into widespread syndication, I'm not going near the show until it wraps up and it can be judged as a complete work. I don't like the idea of a show being made up as it goes along, relying on the whatever staff of writers are payrolled at any given time. If the show was outlined across multiple seasons to reach a natural and deliberate conclusion, making specific points and character developments along the way, that would be great, but I can't shake the feeling that this show is going nowhere. I haven't seen a single episode though - this is what I'm hearing at the water cooler!

Sounds like he got a sweet deal, in the end. And he's perfectly free to pursue writing what he wants and taking his time to sell it, without having to worry about paying the bills.
Good P.R. piece for getting his name out, though.
I got lost keeping up with LOST some time ago, but when i have time, I'll catch up with it.

Yeah, I don't think the show was ever really designed like that. You might as well refuse to watch Family Guy until the final episode airs, on the same grounds. ;)

Not really. I love FAMILY GUY but that's "Situation" comedy - Defined characters put into bite-size situations with no mind to continuity. You can dip into any episode in any order as there is no story arc. If LOST were classed as a "soap opera" then it's all middle-act stuff where the setup is quickly dispensed with and each episode is obstacle/resolution/obstacle and no promise of closure. Premise of LOST suggests that there is (or was originally) some hope of closure.
