Is there release dates or pre-order for VENUS IN FURS and 99 WOMEN anywhere yet?

Also the "X-Rated" version of 99 WOMEN....does that limited edition come with both versions of the film?

Thanks!

I'd like BU would officially write that the extra X scenes were not shot by Franco.

Shame the interview with Maria Rohm is only an audio interview. It would have been interesting to see what she looks like today. Shame theres no interviews with James Darren, Margaret Lee, Paul Muller, etc

They're damned if they do and they're damned if they don't. When they put together the DELERIUM disc for Anchor Bay, they released both versions of the film that was shot by Renato Polselli, but there was additional footage in a French release of the film that featured ecplicit nudity not shot by the director (and of which he was unaware) that didn't make it into either release, and they were crucified for not including it.
I don't think it's the responsibility of the distributor to advertise on the packaging that less than 1% of the film was directed by somebody else -there are films that feature second unit camera work that add up to more than a third of the completed film but those second unit directors don't get their names on the poster. I'm sure that whether or not Jess shot the explicit footage in 99 WOMEN, it will be a question answered in the featurette. I can't see the purpose of flying to Spain to interview him and not asking relevent questions such as this.

or Paris. ;)

I believe Jesus has lived in Paris for quite a while.

Well, it's just this 1 (or 10) % that makes the difference between the English language version and the X-Rated French.

And here it isn't only a matter of first or second unit: the X version changes 99 WOMEN in hardcore and it wasn't Franco who neither wanted nor filmed this.

DVD extras are the right place for such alternative non Franco footage.

There are many different versions of this film. As far I know, BU will release the most part of the alternative footage (the most of them shot by Jess) as extra.

Casey Scott - January 4, 2005 04:51 PM (GMT)
No, Jess Franco does not live in Paris, he lives in a small town in Spain, according to Kit Gavin, who interviewed him for several Media Blasters discs.

Do you mean the other way around? :)

Region 0 as well as region 1?

If not, then I'm not sure what you're asking? Because if they're released in Region 0, then an R1 player will play them. If that's in fact what you're asking, and the only type of player you have only plays R1 dvd's. But I'm sure you know that? Either that or I'm just reading it wrong? Which is definetely a possibility.

Maybe he's in a different region area, and doesn't have a multi-region player, in which case he wouldn't be able to play region 1 dvds, but could play region 0.

Though I've never met anyone outside of region 1 whose player wasn't multi-region.

The details of the releases are up again on Blue Underground's site:

99 Women and Venus in Furs

and for some reason the two-disc version of 99 Women is not listed there but the details are here.

Is there a chance that BU decided not to release the longer French version, since it is believed that Franco didn't shoot the extra hardcore footage? My question is speculative only.

No, they're still releasing it as part of the two disc set, as shown in the link Tom provided: http://www.blue-underground.com/movie.php?movie_id=74

This limited edition two-disc collection features the original version of 99 WOMEN, plus the recently discovered ‘French’ version – featuring all of its long-rumored scenes of extreme sexuality – now totally uncut for the first time ever in America!

Adam Clark - January 16, 2005 01:29 PM (GMT)
So... If I want both versions AND all available extra features, can I justy buy the 2-disc edition, or do I have to buy both? It isn't clear from the BU site (not to me at least!)

So, you pony up for the 2 disc set and get em both ( but please the line forms behind me! ).

John Black - January 16, 2005 06:39 PM (GMT)
It still bothers me that I can't find a listing for the two-disc set of 99 WOMEN on the official Blue Underground site, but I appreciate the links that have been provided here.

Tom Hochman - January 16, 2005 07:10 PM (GMT)
I'm wondering about that as well, but it may just be that they're treating it a bit like they treated SNUFF - keeping it semi-hidden so that only true fans will know to order it. :ph43r: Since the dvd cover has a big X on it and they are calling it the X-Rated French Version it prpbably wouldn't see too much advertising anyway.

Perhaps someone super-knowledgeable like Bruce Holecheck can clarify things here, but I think it's worth pointing out that the February Blue Underground printed sales brochure that I have lists three releases for the month: VENUS IN FURS, the unrated director's cut of 99 WOMEN (90 minutes), and the "notorious X-rated French version" of 99 WOMEN (98 minutes). Neither of the latter two releases would appear to be 2-disc releases (though I thought it was interesting that the unrated cut sells for $19.95 retail and the X-rated cut sells for $29.95 retail), and there is no indication in the detailed release brochure that either version contains the other version with it -- nor is there any other listing for a separate 2-disc release. Perhaps BU, for whatever reason, opted not to do this as a 2-disc set after all, and just wanted to release the two versions separately?

bruce holecheck - January 17, 2005 02:47 AM (GMT)
Haha, I guess I have to respond since I was mentioned by name...

As Travis mentioned, the sales solicitation mailed out earlier doesn't list a two-disc version, but the website has clearly been modified recently to indicate such. I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if I can get a 100% answer.

bruce holecheck - January 17, 2005 09:53 PM (GMT)
I spoke briefly with David Gregory today and he confirmed that there will be two separate single disc releases of 99 WOMEN; one of the “Unrated Director’s Cut” and one of the “French X Version.” There will be no double-disc set.

I’m not sure if this has to do with contractual obligations or what.

John Black - January 18, 2005 07:15 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the update. It seems odd that the discs must be purchased separately, but I'm sure that must be a "good" reason.

There will be no double-disc set.

That's a real dissapointment. Amazon still list "Special Uncensored Two-Disc Collection Includes The Notorious ‘French’ Version! ". I'm not sure how they can justify that high price tag for the single disc of the Hardcore version.

Casey Scott - January 23, 2005 10:18 PM (GMT)
Ok, now this is really bothering me. There is now no mention of the X-rated French version on BU's website, but it's available at Amazon! Is the regular all-Franco version the only disc coming out now? It would be great if a BU representative would keep us posted somewhere on the web, the website is useless.
