Title: Bad news about NIGHT OF THE SORCERERS

William S. Wilson - August 12, 2007 10:08 PM (GMT)
Bill Knight at Midnight Video has reported that the new BCI DVD is missing 38 seconds of footage. It is discussed in more detail here at the Latarnia Forum:

EDIT: I should mention that discussion gets heated and a bit silly on both ends.

Almost a storm in a teacup, but yeah, the Latarnia thread (Latarnia is a board I like very much) is uncharacteristically shrill and heated, a side effect of a few key players being extra passionate about what they see as a poorly done disc, and a couple of extra folks (obvious when you read the thread) with less than helpful comments. Having read all of that I don't see it as an open and shut 'This disc is cut' situation, more an issue regarding variant and best-available prints differing from fuzzy bootlegs available elsewhere, with (an important point) most of this stuff recognised by BCI and included elsewhere on the disc in a supplement from best-available sources. I have no problem in still getting the disc. It's a long and hairy read but folks interested in the full details are directed to the thread linked above.

Wow - that was some fun reading. More fun than the movie under debate!

All of the debate hasn't changed my mind one bit about getting this film, a BIG favourite of mine. I'm just eagerly waiting for Best Buy to get the two pack, with Naschy's EXORCISM, in stock!

I'm finding it more distressing that they're wasting pixels on open-matte transfers. Every screenshot I've seen from NOTS, EXORCISM, and VENGEANCE OF THE ZOMBIES tells me these could really use the matting compositionally.

Threads like that can be entertaining in a geekshow sort of way, but more often they just make me want to kick my message board habit. Guess that makes me Tyrone Power in this scenario, which admittedly is a first.

You know, Night of the Sorcerers was my introduction to Eurohorror, and I'll be glad to finally catch it again in a reasonable release. I haven't seen it since the early seventies, when I actually was given a "This goes out to..." from Chiller Theater host Dan Imel.

I didn't request the thing, but in the end I was happier receiving that than the Godzilla flick I had written in about.

Pretty soon, I was tuning in to see films I'd never even heard of like Planet of the Vampires and Bell From Hell (the station must have gotten a package deal).

Is the release date for this 8/7 or 8/21? Amazon and Best Buy's websites list it as 8/21, but BCI's site lists 8/7. Plus, it's already available online from Xploited and various eBay sellers.

Domenick Fraumeni - August 13, 2007 08:43 PM (GMT)
It's available from online sources but the Best Buy two pack with Naschy's EXORCISM, won't be available until Aug. 21 :(.

My Best Buy had the 2-pack on the shelf today for $17.99 so I grabbed one of the two copies they had out. Add to that the fact that a 50 pack of Verbatim DVD-R's rang up for $11.99 and I walked out a happy camper!

Bill, what does the label say on yours? I've been trying to see if maybe my local BB had a copy in the back I could buy, but all they could find was the single NIGHT OF THE SORCERERS for 19.95, on Aug.21. No two pack was found.

See the pics below for the covers. The UPC code is on the back, top right, if that helps. The cover sticker reads: "Best Buy Exclusive! Two Classic Spanish Horror Films Complete and Uncut Original Versions."

Many thanks. I'll see if they have any, today "fingers crossed".

The Best Buy near me had three on the shelf today at $17.99 each, and I picked one up. They had them filed under "D." I'm guessing because the top of the pack says "Double Feature." Basically, when I look for something in the store, I look through the entire alphabet of a section and also check different sections, because you never know where a title will be filed. I'm grateful they had 'em, though.

Got mine today as well. A bit disappointed that the discs don't come in separate packages, like the previous twofer, as I like to keep my Naschy's separately, but otherwise, this is a great buy.
The transfers on both are gorgeous. You can now make out the crystal clear water in NOTS, and the day for night scenes are much better looking, here. Some alternate scenes and the missing seconds can be found at the end of the clothed scenes section. I'm not sure why they don't have a separate section of their own, as they run a good few minutes, but they're there at least. The opening scene does play a bit stronger in the deleted/alternate scenes section, but it's really not that big of a difference and it doesn't change the tone and intent of the scene at all.

A stellar release, with beautiful menus, excellent liner notes, and a great transfer. another winner from BCI, as far as I'm concerned.

Watching the trailer (in English), I noticed the narrator says at the end of it: "Coming to a theater near you." And text with those words appears as well. I thought NOTS had only been released directly to TV in the US, but this now makes me wonder if it ever played in theaters.
