Title: RABID DOGS year of production?
Henrik Hemlin - August 6, 2007 12:07 PM (GMT)
In the audio commentary for Mario Bava's RABID DOGS, Tim Lucas mentions that the film was shot in the hot summer of 1975 (also noting in a subsequent anecdote that someone died three months later in October). Furthermore, here is a quote from Tim's WatchBlog entry of Nov 8, 2006: "[...] a guest appearance with Carlo Rambaldi on a full hour talk show called L'OSPITE DALLE DUE ("The Guests at 2:00") that aired in July 1974, shortly after Bava's abandonment of THE HOUSE OF EXORCISM and nearly a full year before his next production, RABID DOGS."
However, as Lamberto Bava recalls it in the KIDNAPPED documentary, the film was made in '73 or '74, and Leone says that it sat on the shelf for 28 years (KIDNAPPED was finished in 2001). Also, the production info appendix of Troy Howarth's book THE HAUNTED WORLD OF MARIO BAVA mentions that the film was shot from August 20, 1973. Plus, the film was supposedly made shortly after LISA AND THE DEVIL, which was finished in 1973.
Tim, could you shed some light on this?

C'mon, Tim, say "1975" again!

Do it do it do it do it do it.

It was 1974, actually.
What you have here is a bunch of people speaking off the top of their heads from fuzzy memory -- Lamberto and Alfredo particularly; I don't know where Troy got his specific date, but it may be a typo. I'm certainly not impervious to spontaneous error myself, but I place ultimate trust in my book where these matters are concerned, and it says -- contrary to my own public statements -- that RABID DOGS was shot in August 1974. I had an actual call sheet from the production as reference, and Leone's recollection that Bava abandoned HOUSE OF EXORCISM to make RABID DOGS. So the television appearance took place a month before the shoot.

I must say, that's rather a nice compromise!
Tim, after your first reply I was scratching my head and was about to post "Now, where do I find the tone-of-voice knob on this here doohickey..?" but didn't dare as I thought I had already said something offensive. Apparently, Mr Harland Smith and Mr McKee thought so too. ;)
Alfredo Leone was right, though. I mentioned 2001 in my post, which is when the additional scenes for KIDNAPPED were shot, but the actual premiere was in 2002. '74 to '02 is 28 years.

Nah, we're just teasing, Henrik. We're all pals here.

Lovin' this thread. Note that Tim has spilled the beans about the included titles in the MARIO BAVA COLLECTION VOLUME 2 over at his blog, the perfect Halloween gift for the Eurocult collector that wants everything. (I'm getting it).
