Anyone else catch this? Both my wife and I were pleasently surprised by the series opner, it was a lot better than I thought it would be (AMC not being my favorite station!). Sets, costumes, music, script and acting is top-notch. It's nice to watch the world of 47 years ago unfold again!

Agreed. Good stuff. This looks to be the TV find of summer, with a snappy script and a game cast. Maybe the new and not-so-good AMC is finding its sea legs.

Having grown up in the 60s, it's weird for me that everybody on the show smokes... but there IS no smoke. I remember rooms where the air was turned blue from second hand smoke but the air on MAD MEN is gin clear.

True, I remember seeing the adult parties and the room would be fogged in from it!

I can only assume that the smoke-filled air is clear for reasons of "readability," so that the actors don't get lost in the haze. (And, however odd it may look, I want to see these excellent actors through the smoke. So far a terrific show, one that HBO is said to be kicking itself for passing on...not that it's encouraged me to give anything else on the dread AMC a try. A few more like it, maybe.)

I take it they're puffing away on clove cigarettes, the kind they use in the theater. I saw a show recently where the constant smoking of those became as cloying as the smell of regular cigs becomes nauseating.

Anyway, the smoking reminds me of movies like THEM!, where the scientific cabals take place in rooms that are literally smoke-filled. Smart guys, as if there aren't more pervasive threats to humankind than giant ants. :)

I've caught this a little late but love what I've seen so far.

I'd be curious to find out what the actors are actually smoking, if it's actually real cigarettes. Something about cigarette smoke that looks so good on celluloid.

Well, it catches light and adds movement to static frames.

Wow, that was ploddingly literal of me!

Sal, according an inteview w/ the producer that I heard on NPR, they're smoking herbal cigarettes.

I had a feeling they would go that route. Although from what I've read those herbal cigs can be just as bad.

I'm curious to see where this show goes. Summer 2008 seems like a lifetime away. I guess nothing has been shot for season 2. I heard they just got picked up for another season. I wonder how tv works, if they have any scripts written for season 2 or if they just wait until they see the green light?

At least it was a great season finale!
