Title: Bavas LA VENERE D'ILLE on dvd?

Mathias Jonsson - July 20, 2007 12:23 PM (GMT)
Who holds the rights to Bava's LA VENERE D'ILLE?? Is it RAI Television? And have there been any plans to release this film on dvd???

It was originally produced by Pont-Royal film TV. I have a recording from Rai TV. Not sure who owns the rights though.

I believe RAI-TV owns the world rights. I obtained my copy from their New York office, years and years ago. I don't know that RAI plans to release anything on DVD, but they could certainly assemble a wonderful Bava disc -- LA VENERE D'ILE, the 1975 L'OSPITE DALLE DUE interview with Bava and Carlo Rambaldi, various newsreels featuring Bava and his work, maybe even his television commercials...

When RAI launched its online archive of sample programs (RAIClick) a couple years back, the Bava was among the featured films. I'm very glad I watched it there when I had the chance as it's an excellent production, among my favorites by the director...

I'd like to see it paired with Camillo Mastrocinque's AN ANGEL FOR SATAN.

Tim Lucas - July 23, 2007 04:17 AM (GMT)
It should really be paired with all the other episodes of THE DEVIL'S NOTEBOOK: FANTASTIC TALES OF THE 19th CENTURY, the series of classic horror stories of which it was part. There were only six episodes, and one of the others was directed by Giulio Questi. I'm not sure that any of the others were ever shown; the Bava episode was only shown in the wake of his death.
