Title: The Psychic
Description: Murder to The Tune Of Seven Black Notes

In 2002 Bruce H mentioned he'd dug up some nice supplemental material for the disc for a Image release. What did happen? Any sign of an English language DVD release anywhere in the world?

Meantimes, I have the nice French anamorphic DVD (in French only), and a letterbox Japanese VHS in English - which could be combined.

Well, seeing as how Lionsgate is releasing ALLIGATOR on DVD soon, here is my hypothesis:

The former Vestron Video made a deal with the former Group I International distribution company for the rights to their movies, which included ALLIGATOR, THE PSYCHIC, CINDERELLA with Rainbeaux Smith, and other films of theirs.

Since Vestron was absorbed by Artisan and then Lionsgate, while nothing seemed to be happening with those Group I titles, many assumed that the deal was dead and the rights had scattered around. At one point, Quentin Tarantino announced that his Rolling Thunder company was planning a reissue under its original title of SEVEN NOTES IN BLACK, but nothing came of it.
Then came Image, who was already carving out a Eurocult niche with releases of HOUSE WITH THE LAUGHING WINDOWS and selected Jess Franco titles, who approached the European rightsholders of SEVEN NOTES IN BLACK, and made a deal in principle.

But no! Group I and Lionsgate come out of the woodwork and prove that they do indeed still control the title for North America, and they have no intention of letting it go.

However, seeing as how indeed, we are finally getting an ALLIGATOR DVD, maybe there is hope that we can get a DVD of THE PSYCHIC as well.

Aren't you guys aware of this DVD release?

Achtung! Bootleg!

Alfa Digital are part of Luminous Video Wurks - essentially they specialise in ripping foreign DVD releases and adding English subs. A useful service, no doubt, but they shouldn't be confused with a legitimate company...

More than a bit off-topic, but:

Anybody know how to add subtitles to a Video_TS folder (using a Mac, preferably)? I can add 'em to an AVI, and there's a 'cheat' program that allows you to place a subtitle file *next* to a Video_TS folder saved to a hard drive, but that only allows you to watch the content on the computer - not to burn w/subs to disc.

I ask because I've got Shriek Show's original, interlaced/standards converted TWO ORPHAN VAMPIRES w/subs, and the replacement, properly-transferred version which was mistakenly issued *without subtitles* <_< . I've tried two copies of the replacement, neither has the subs.

The dub is awful, the first transfer is awful, and I'd rather not watch my 'cludge copy' on my desktop, though that's my best option just now.

Any suggestions? Maybe I could take it up with Alfa! ;)

I've not tried adding subtitles in the way you want to, but if you could try demuxing the files in the TS folders to extract the video/audio/subtitle streams and then sync up the versions of each that you want in a DVD authoring program like DVD Studio Pro. I've only done this for just audio and video streams before, so I'm not 100% sure if you could do it with subtitles too ... but it's worth a look.

I use ffmpegx software for the demuxing, which is free to download from the intertubes.

Ahh, this brings back memories of Shriek Show's high quality control standards from back in the day.

My reissue copy had subtitles. I wonder if its your player. The SS disc I have of HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK would not display subtitles for the Deodato interview on my DVD player but they showed up when played on my computer.

Nope - 2 players and a computer for my first 'fixed' copy, and 2 other players and a different computer on the second 'fixed' copy.

You're absolutely sure that you've got the reissue, right? I also had a second copy of the *original* issue recently shipped to me from DVD Empire (hoping it might be an updated, 'actually fixed' 'fixed' copy), so the old ones are still out there on the marketplace...

Mine was a replacement copy directly from Shriek Show (I sent both the original disc and the retail disc of ZOMBI 3 together and got both replacements).

Yep, mine too.

Off to puzzle over ffmpegx...

ffmpegx isn't always the most user-friendly piece of software.

Once you've got it set up, click on the "Tools" tab to find the "demux" option.

(I've not tried it myself yet, but also under "Tools" in the "author" section it looks like you can attach a subtitle track to an mpg file and export it as VIDEO_TS ... thereby not needing the use of another program like DVD Studio Pro.)

Slightly off topic does anyone know of the best site to order the Neo Lucio Fulci releases?

Eric Cotenas - July 22, 2007 05:09 AM (GMT)
I think you can buy direct from Neo's site. Amazon.fr has a lot of the titles but last time I checked THE PSYCHIC was OOP but available used from Amazon.fr's sellers.
