Fair warning for those who haven't heard: SUNSHINE may mark the first time that Michelle Yeoh and Henry Sanada have been in a movie together since ROYAL WARRIORS but do bear in mind that Michelle's SUNSHINE character is more like Keiko O'Brien (in STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION and STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE) than, say, Ripley in any of the ALIENS movies... For all this though, have to say that I generally found enough to like in SUNSHINE and feel able to give it at least a qualified recommendation. :ph43r:

Henry Sanada?
Don't you mean Hiroyuki Sanada?

Yvonne Teh - July 17, 2007 02:43 PM (GMT)
Yes. Henry Sanada was how Hiroyuki Sanada (often) was credited on ROYAL WARRIORS.

August Ragone - July 17, 2007 07:02 PM (GMT)
He was pushed as Henry Sanada, and then billed as Duke Sanada, for the overseas PR for the Toei-produced ROARING FIRE... B)

And not even mentioned in this review! :(

Caught this in the theater today. Both Yeoh and Sanada are excellent in it--though I have to give particular props to the latter, who carries off his commanding role flawlessly. As for the film itself, I was dazzled and captivated...that is, right up to the last half hour, when its dramatic integrity burst like a popped balloon.

I can just see the script discussion now:

"So, we have one of the most visionary, thought-provoking science fiction movies in decades. What can we do to give ordinary audiences something to identify with?"

***SPOILER***

"I know, let's put in a psycho stalker serial killer!"

***END SPOILER***

<_< Either Danny Boyle is desperate to break into Hollywood, or else he thinks he's already there...

Miles Wood - July 24, 2007 04:52 AM (GMT)
Dan, I agree with you that the film loses its way and possibly its audience at the end, but "visionary"? Maybe it might seem so to those not familiar with SILENT RUNNING or DARK STAR, but while I did like the look and atmosphere (re)created, I feel it is too second-hand to be called visionary.

Dan Helmick - July 24, 2007 05:01 AM (GMT)
I was thinking more in terms of the scenery than the characters (in the latter sense I was probably most strongly reminded of ALIEN)...but let's not speak too loudly about that. If the wrong person overhears us, we'll be seeing two more '70s movies remade. :ph43r:
