Title: Wisely movies
Description: How many are there?

Terry Barhorst, Jr. - July 16, 2007 01:05 AM (GMT)
I'll start off with the two I have/know about for sure:

THE CAT(1992)
LEGEND OF WISELY (1987)

What with another Indy movie in the pipeline, I gotta wonder if anyones thinking it's time for another Wisely movie. And if so, who to play Wisely?

the wisely movies are in desperate need of a franchise reboot.
i've never read the books but i heard none of the movies were close to capture the feel of the novels except for "The Cat".

I'll start off with the two I have/know about for sure:

THE CAT(1992)
LEGEND OF WISELY (1987)

There's also THE SEVENTH CURSE (1986) in which Chow Yun fat plays Wisely.

There's also BURY ME HIGH from 1991, which stars Chin Kar Lok as Wisely and has an interesting supporting cast. Here's my IMDB review of it:

BURY ME HIGH

I reviewed SEVENTH CURSE on IMDB, too. Here's the link:

Did a little digging on my own...

Complete list of Wisely movies:

SEVENTH CURSE (86)
THE LEGEND OF WISELY (87)
BURY ME HIGH (91)
THE CAT (92)
THE WESLEY'S MYSTERIOUS FILE (2002)

BURY ME HIGH is also in my library, so I'm just missing two titles.

Over the years Wisely has been played respectively by:

Chow Yun Fat
Sam Hui
Chin Kar Lok
Waise Lee (heh)
Andy Lau

Sooner or later Joy Sales will release SEVENTH CURSE on dvd (vcd only right now). Only the Tai Seng import of the Mei Ah disc of THE WESLEY'S MYSTERIOUS FILE seems to be available right now (OK. The Mei Ah disc is out there too, it just takes a little finding).

There doesn't seem to have been much in the way of continuity actor wise.

Edit:

Just saw Brian's post, but no one's mentioned FILE yet...

Hello,

What about the following films?:

Yu Guangrong in "Mirage" (1987)
Roy Chiao in "Life Is a Moment" (1987)
David Wu in "Young Wisely" (1993) and "Rebirth of the Goddess" (1994)

Cool. All the previously mentioned Wisely movies seem to be pretty well known, if not exactly on the tip of the tongue, but I don't think I've heard or read about MIRAGE, LIFE IS A MOMENT, YOUNG WISELY, or REBIRTH OF THE GODDESS. I can understand not seeing/hearing about the tv material, but why have these movies been off the radar? Or was I just not paying attention?

Hello Terry (and everyone else),

Nature of fandom, one supposes. You speak and read certain languages, I speak and read some others. Everyone gets together and we all exchange info. Before the net, I remember people used to have to make trans-Atlantic and Pacific calls switching among languages and dialects every few minutes to find out basic stuff. Now, however, that all see downright antediluvian.

I'm not a Wisely fan, though I did get the 2003 TVB serial for my mom during Christmas a few years back. I know nothing about the series or adaptations but stuff seems available. See:

"Life Is a Moment" (1987)

"Young Wisely" (1993)

"Rebirth of the Goddess" (1994)

Or not. It seems odd that the last two never got bigger release owing to the large fan communities for Carrie Ng and Loretta Lee.

well, if it helps, i've recently re-worked on the subtitles for "The Legend of Wisely" starring Sam Hui as the titular role. my work can be found in the recent DVD re-release from Joy Sales. someone made comparisons to my translations and the translations found in the Universe Laser & Video release. Aside from the mispelling of the main character's name, everything else is a noticeable improvement.

There has been some debate about it over the years, but some feel that Jet Li's DR. WAI AND THE SCRIPTURE WITH NO WORDS qualifies as an unofficial Wisely movie.
