Title: A BRIEF HISTORY OF DISBELIEF
Description: On PBS stations this summer; NYC tonight

Michael Wells - July 15, 2007 05:09 PM (GMT)
I'm really excited to see this 3-hour BBC TV documentary, made in 2004, finally showing up around these United States. It's created by and starring veteran TV and theater luminary Jonathan Miller, and in it he talks about his own atheism and explores unbelief and skepticism across the ages.

A website by the American distributor is here. Click on the "broadcast calendar" link to see if and when it's playing on a station near you. You will notice, of course, in how many places it's playing at 3:00 in the morning or some other such garbage. Hardly surprising, of course.

Here, on New York's WNET, it starts tonight in the relatively visible slot of 10:30, with the next two hours in the same slot over the following Sunday nights. I was also excited to see that it's playing in my hometown of Lansing, Michigan, on WKAR; in fact, it started last Thursday night, when I was there for the July 4th holiday, although I didn't discover that until today.

I'd previously known Miller only as the man behind the classic 1968 TV adaptation of M.R. James' "Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad" (by reputation; haven't seen it yet). But apparently he's quite the figure over in the isles, and was particularly deeply involved in the British satire boom of the late '60s/early '70s.

Maybe this is a small step towards the day when such views can get a decent hearing in the American media. I don't suppose I should hold my breath for the arrival of Miller's sequel, THE ATHEISM TAPES, on these shores anytime soon. Oh, well, it's probably on YouTube.
