Title: THE HATCHET MURDERS on Fangoria T.V.
Description: Argento on the air

Domenick Fraumeni - July 14, 2007 12:47 AM (GMT)
Fangoria T.V. is showing Dario Argento's PROFONDO RUSSO under the title of THE HATCHET MURDERS. I don't ever recall seeing it with this title. It's in English, and the player says it runs 83 min., though I suppose it could be wrong. The first murder is definitely intact.

Is there a tape release of this with the actual HATCHET MURDERS title on the print itself?

The old video box for this in the US used to be titled Deep Red: The Hatchet Murders; so that's sort of the title I grew up with it as.
I don't recall any actual hatchet murders in any cut of the film, though.

Yep, HBO released under the title John has mentioned.

Nice to know that Fangoria is really on the ball. I suppose thay got their broadcast master from Thorn EMI home video - I hope at least they got it in the hard-shell box.

Yeah, a lousy broadcast, but I don't recall the Thorn-EMI tape having that title. I could've sworn it said DEEP RED.

The Thorn-EMI print itself says DEEP RED. It has the standard English-language DEEP RED opening title sequence*. It's only called DEEP RED: THE HATCHET MURDERS on the box itself (kind of like DEEP RED being released in Japan as SUSPIRIA PART 2, while the print itself bears the actual DEEP RED title).

* Oddly enough, the end titles are in Italian, though. I remember DEMONS also played in the U.S. with the opening titles in English, but the end titles were Italian.

That's what got my attention, here. The actual title on the print is THE HATCHET MURDERS, so I was wondering where Fangoria got their copy from.

I don't have my copy on hand but isn't there a US poster for DEEP RED titled THE HATCHET MURDERS in Maitland McDonaugh's BROKEN MIRRORS/BROKEN MINDS?

Did the Fangoria broadcast run 83 minutes? The Thorn EMI video was definitely the over-90 minute english language cut...

I haven't played the entire thing yet, so I'm unsure. If I'm able to, I'll try to play it out this week and see how long it runs. The violence seems intact, but I only saw the first 20 minutes.
It does open with the usual opening credits style, with the murder seen halfway through, then opens directly with shot of the curtains opening up on the conference.

It's a copy of the Thorn EMI video tape cover Andrew reproduced above, it's on pp110. The poster is on pp105 and is for the film as just 'Deep Red'. It asks "When was the last time you were REALLY scared? The Exorcist... Psycho... Jaws... Now there's DEEP RED. You will never forget it"!

According to the books 'Blood & Black Lace' and 'Art of Darkness', DEEP RED was released on VHS in the US by Thorn EMI and by HBO. The former release is simply described as 'cut, full screen', whilst the latter is given a run time of 100 min.

According to the Alan Jones book 'Profondo Argento', the film was released twice theatrically in the US, the first time as 'Deep Red' (in 1976), run time 98 min, then again in 1980 as 'The Hatchet Murders', run time 100 min, both rated R.

Don't know if any of this helps?!

Thorn-EMI later became HBO/Cannon Video and then, simply, HBO Video. The two DEEP RED tapes mentioned above were identical aside from the difference in company name.
