Title: ASTRO BOY on Adult Swim
Description: cryptic post about Sat 7/14 @ 2am

Maybe this would've been appropriate on the Japanese board, but I though the TV forum was equally appropriate.
Consistent with their wacky manner, Adult Swim states (in handwritten notes, even) on their schedule that they will be airing the "new/old anime" ASTRO BOY each Saturday @ 2am beginning this week.
Adult Swim shecdule calendar. Here's hoping it turns out to be the return of one of the greatest kid shows of the 1960s to broadcast.

Well, the last "Astro Boy" series to run on TV was the 2003 remake, which was syndicated to regular TV for a while and then ran on Cartoon Network. I don't know if the 1980 color remake ever ran on TV in the U.S. However, the time slot listed for it, 2 AM / 5:30 AM is usually reserved for vintage series--the original "Gigantor" ran there until a few months ago, and "Voltron" has been running in it since--so it might very well be the original 1963 series. But until CN tells us one way or another OR we set our timers to record it and check it Sunday morning, we have no way of knowing.
I put in a call to Cartoon Network to find out, but they forwarded me to someone's voicemail. I left a message with some urgency in it. I actually have a good professional reason to request this info. So we'll see.

Okay, Cartoon Network tells me it's the 2003 remake that will be running on Adult Swim, not the classic b&w series.

Just had to say, that I went ahead and dvr'd this just out of curiosity and they showed the first episode of THE ORIGINAL BLACK & WHITE SERIES!!!! YIPPEEEE!!! Though I've had a copy of the first epiosde in one form or another for 20 years, it almost made me cry to see this on broadcast for the first time since the early 70s. It's on the schedule for 2am Sat night / Sunday Morning for the next several weeks so set you tivo, vcr, dvr or whatever now!!!

For those who don't wish to bother with Cartoon Network, the Right Stuf have put the entire original series (the American version) out in two very nice DVD box sets.

The dvd's are fantastic (I give it a 10 out of 10) but watching them on Cartoon Network is a good way for the curious to see what the buzz was all about before shelling out $70 per set for a series which has been largely MIA since the 70s.

So, CN's PR person gave me wrong info. (Gee, now how often does THAT happen?) You'd think they'd want to publicize the fact that they're running the original show.
Well, good for you, Raymond. When in doubt, record it anyway. That's the only way to find out for sure.

Oh, no question, I should have added Netflix has them for those who wish to rent rather than buy unseen.

Brian, if it helps, DirecTV had it listed as being the updated version. Reason I avoided recording it as well. Oh, well.

Yeah, I checked with CN's programmer & he confirmed that this was the 1963 B&W version.
