DEATH SHIP and
GHOST SHIP are just about the closest I've ever seen. It's such awful marketing. GHOST SHIP blatantly ripped off that earlier campaign, but still managed to make it 100 times less evocative.
Heh. How about
this one and
this one.

HA! That NIXON and CONGO one never dawned on me. And speaking of DAWN, how about
this versus
this?
My absolute all-time favorite though is
this versus
this. We've entered a new era when the Italians are the ones getting ripped off.

This was always a favorite from my days working at Blockbuster:

Slightly bending the thread in a musical direction, can anybody guess the inspiration behind this rejected album artwork [by Storm Thorgerson] for the Mars Volta's Amputechture album?
Amputechture

As one who had his taste warped at a tender age by Re/Search's book
Incredibly Strange Films, I say it's gotta be THE MASK (1961)...
Martin Brooks - July 13, 2007 08:03 PM (GMT)
Well done Jeffrey, Chas and Aleck. The Mask is correct! I suspect though, that the inspiration comes from the front cover of the Incredibly Strange Films' book.
I wonder why it was rejected by the band? Don't they like THE MASK :P ?

Slightly off-topic, but the RE/SEARCH Pranks book is incredible.

I'm sure that had to be a parody, not a ripoff.

That's pretty quick turnaround on the Breakfast Club and TCM II posters. According to IMDb the former was released in February 1985, while the latter bowed in August 1986. Doesn't the joke only work well when the two are side by side? Is the BC poster design that iconic? I think if the spoof poster was for another teen film, ideally a parody like Not Another Teen Movie, the connection would be more obvious.

And yet the fact remains that it's an intentional parody, that all concerned with TCM 2 cop to.

As good a reason as any to plug my blog, then - I posted a bunch of different MASK posters just the other day!
Put the Mask on NOW!!!

Maybe the video of The Breakfast Club was coming out around the same time as TC2... I seem to recall it took a while for vids to get released back then.

In case the image below isn't appearing: How about
NIGHT BREED and
BAD DREAMS?

If I recall correctly, Cliver Barker said that a regime change at the studio resulted in the new guys dumping and/or sabotaging the current releases of all the old guys flicks including his own movie NIGHT BREED. Looking at this poster I can't imagine why he might think such a thing.
Seriously though, how does ANYONE, even someone with an axe to grind and/or the most talentless of all marketing people/departments, manage to watch NIGHT BREED and justify coming up with this for its poster and tagline?
Oh, and the TCM2 poster is definitely an intentional nod to the BC one-sheet.

Yes, this is clear. I feel it was an odd choice to lampoon BC, but the posters sure look funny when posted side by side.
