Title: Is the Aussie zombie film UNDEAD coming to R1?

I think that VideoEta.com had a listing for the R1 release of Undead for a while, but I can't find it now, and Amazon only has a listing for the Australian disc, which it lists as being 'out of print'. Poker carries the R4 Australian import, and I am multi-region capable, but it's a little pricey (about $35) and having an R1 disc of a movie out usually makes it a lot easier to rent.

IIRC, the Lion's Gate Cabin Fever disc has a trailer for Undead, so I would've expected to have heard something about it by now. (Most of the external reviews linked to on the IMDB are none too positive, but I'd still rent it if I had the opportunity.) It seems like now would be a good time to give it a release with the popularity of Shaun of the Dead and other zombie films (Shaun of the Dead was all checked out at my favorite video store for a while, I finally got to see it last night. I enjoyed it for the most part, but it's no Dead Alive or Wild Zero). Has anyone here seen Undead?

I saw this about 1 1/2 years ago and thought it was just terrible. It tries really hard to be the next BRAIN DEAD but with very little of that film's wit and style. The two filmmakers talked at the screening and it was obvious that the film was a true labor of love for them. In their defense, they made a great looking film on a very small budget but sadly this doesn't mean much to me when the characters and story stink.

Lion's Gate has this one in the U.S. and appears to be pulling a Miramax with it.

Last I heard Lion's Gate is releasing it July 4 weekend.

I saw it earlier this year at a genre festival in SF and I didn't share the ecstatic reaction of some audience members and as Todd says it's very much RETURN OF THE LIVING BRAIN/DEAD, but its heart is in the right place, which counts for something these days, and there's certainly much much worse out there. A 16:9 Japanese DVD (unlike the Oz disc it'll be NTSC) is available priced at 3,800 Yen.

I'd have to agree with Todd (Bowman) and Miles with this. It's rather nice to see what they did with their budget, but it's not *that* impressive at the end of the day compared to other genre films that managed to actually be good as well. I found the characters to be nails-on-chalkboard annoying, and the plot is as basic as it gets.

There's a caveat that a lot of people *do* enjoy this film, so I can't say skip it. Frankly though I'm so used to being the sole voice of dissent on this film on other boards that I feel a bit surprised and grateful to see that indeed, it *isn't* just me. Thanks guys. ;)

That July 4th date is pretty solid I think. Meant as counter-programming(to what I don't know). Lion's Gate is taking it out as a limited release before dvd in the fall.

I can't wait til this one comes out! I read some very good reviews of it, and I always try to see zombie flicks if they sound like they attempt something different in the genre.
