Two new weblinks on Fantasia. So far I've seen 26 movies over a seven days span. Today though I take a day off. I've written a small overview of the event but for a french website.

Having previously seen most of Fantasia's Asian films either at our New York Asian Film Festival, or previously, while engaged in programming for the the NY fest, my Fantasia focus for the past several days has been non-Asian movies. That said, one I had not previously seen was 13 BELOVED, which I liked a lot, despite an ending that didn't quite work for me. Other Asian films that played both fests that impressed me a great deal are MEMORIES OF MATSUKO and BIG BANG LOVE, JUNVENILE A.

Three of my Fantasia faves so far this year have - much to my surprise - all been from the US! They are:

THE SIGNAL
All TVs and Radios turn to static. Many of those who are exposed to the
static turn delusional, irrational and homicidal... but only intermittently.
As such, this means that you can't always tell who has been infected and who has not. And those who have been infected are not aware of it. No matter how rabidly vicious they become, they somehow rationalize their behavior to themselves. Do you trust no one and risk facing alone the insane evil that is literally pounding at your door, or do you risk taking people in to help you get through things, knowing that the person you've taken in might be moments away from rationalizing a reason to take your life away from you?

This is an intense film from 3 directors who each took a portion, and while the tone shifts from deadly serious to darkly comic (and back again) as each director takes his turn, the end product is intense and fully satisfying.

SPECIAL
A depressed comic book fan agrees to take an experimental drug designed to make people feel more confident about themselves and their abilities.
Though it has worked well for 1000's of others, it unfortunately causes this
man to begin believing that he has certain superpowers. Quitting his job, he decides to use his powers to fight crime, but - unfortunately - he begins to see crime where it isn't. While laugh-out-loud funny at first, the man's mental illness becomes increasingly tragic for him and those around him. And, of course, there are the drug company reps who are prepared to do ANYTHING to make this man disappear.

RIGHT AT YOUR DOOR
Chemical bombs are dropped on L.A. Citizens are warned to seal themselves up inside their homes and avoid contact with anyone who has been exposed. The authorities do not know much about the chemical, but as soon as they've learned something conclusive, they will provide the public with more info, and send help. But in the meantime, what do you do if you are seemingly safe in your home, while your husband or wife is outside and exposed? Do you seal yourself away from them, leaving them outside for several days amongst the airborne chemical ash while the authorities search for answers? Or do you allow them inside, and risk your life and the lives of others in your home? The message at the dark bottom of this one seems to be "What you don't know may kill you".
