Title: WHO CAN KILL A CHILD?
Description: US vs Spanish version

I recieved Dark Sky's WHO CAN KILL A CHILD? disc today. Here's a question for those familiar with the film from whatever sources before this release (including theatrical): what was cut from the AIP version?

I know that some of the Spanish language footage in the film was cut from the film either while making the English export version and/or the AIP shorter cut but I recall reading that Serrador prefered the English dub because it was multi-lingual while the Spanish dub had everyone speaking Spanish. There's quite a bit of Spanish dialogue that requires subtitles in this complete composite. Did the AIP version have subtitles for certain Spanish scenes (for instance, where the guy in the hotel tells the hero how it all started)?

Thankfully, the first chapter is restricted to just the title sequence so you can skip past it to the beginning of the film proper. I read that this title sequence was replaced for the AIP version. What did AIP use in its place? Also, is the AIP verison the only English language cut or were there longer ones with the WHO CAN KILL A CHILD title translated?

The AIP version is the only one I've seen so I can't tell you what was cut, but I know there were no scenes with subtitles in it. Also, the opening credits played out over beach scenes of people finding the body washed up on shore.

Not exactly on subject, but this made me notice that this did indeed get released.

Does anyone know why Netflix dropped this movie? Or if they have?

It fell off my queue over the weekend - well, into my saved folder - and I assumed it would pop back on, as this happens occasionally. Then the other disks from Dark Sky seem to have been released and handled by Netflix with no problem.

Anyone know anything about this?

I'm guessing not enough people put it in their queue, or they balked at the content. Same thing happened to me with this title. Also with AN EVENING WITH PAUL LYNDE. Bastards. So I blind-bought this. Turned out to not really be my type of film, but I'll admit it's well made.

I assume that it's something like that. It sounds odd to me that they had substantially more requests for The Last Hunter or Search and Destroy/The Glove to me. But maybe I'm wrong... or maybe it's the content issue. It's rather annoying as I'm short of blind-buying funds right now, but I'll check some local stores soon, I suppose.

How can it be a content issue when they offer BATTLE ROYALE?

Perhaps they balked at the title. In any case, they're dead to me.

I don't know why that would be dropped by Netflix. Blockbuster Online has it as I just rented it. An aside, I loved this film. It was so effective. I think the hybrid English/Spanish track really works well. Funny to hear the director say he wasn't so crazy for Lewis Fiander, because I thought he did a wonderful job and I really empathized with him. So many Euro-cult films end up being disappointing, but this was such a nice suprise!

It is a good movie. The atrocity footage that plays under the opening credits is so strong the 112-minute film doesn't need to have much in the way of horror content for its first hour, and indeed it doesn't. It's mostly all set-up, but very effective. When it comes, it delivers, even if the blood is as so often in 70s films too red paint-like to be fully convincing (maybe that's a relief).

I wanted to know how Serrador worked with the children (one of whom looks a lot like Lindsay Lohan) but he doesn't go into it, though he does say he would have moved the historical footage to the end credits if he had to do it all over again. The film would undoubtedly be much better known if original pick Anthony Hopkins and not the underrated Fiander had starred.

I was lucky enough to spend time recently at the beach where Serrador shot parts of this film... in just a few decades it's changed completely into a popular tourist destination.
