I believe people outside the UK can listen to the show via the BBC website.

You should also be able to Listen Again to the interview for up to a week after it's broadcast.

Thanks Julian, I'll give that a listen tonight. I'm a Hellman fan, but to tell you the truth I would've guessed him dead.

Julian Knott - June 18, 2007 07:20 AM (GMT)
It's not on until the 22nd, Paul.

He sometimes teaches at USC these days. A few months ago I was discussing Hellman with a friend. Another friend – who I'd never peg as a fan – overheard us and chipped in that she knew Monte. Turns out she had taken a class with him. I'm so envious!

Monte's recent short STANLEY'S GIRLFRIEND - an episode of TRAPPED ASHES - is a miniature masterpiece. He has just finished making a documentary in which he revisits the locations of TWO-LANE BLACKTOP. This will appear on various DVD reissues of TWO-LANE (though not Universal's new Region 2 disc).

Looks like posts on Hellman should be moved to the arthouse board:

Monte Hellman among 115 invited to join the Academy this year...

Is this being reissued in R1? I'm multiregion/PAL-capable, but I'm just curious - I never got around to picking up the Anchor Bay R1 release when it was still in print, and I've since been unwilling to pay the inflated prices it sells for now. Still have the old Roan Group laserdisc, though, which is a nice transfer but lacks any of the extras found on the AB DVD.

Yes. A Criterion special edition is in the works. In the meantime, Universal's UK disc looks very nice, and contains the Hellman/Gary Kurtz commentary track from the AB disc (though there is no mention of this on the packaging).

Hellman participated in a panel last year at the Los Angeles Film Festival about 'the films you never see.'

It was meant to be about the challenges of theatrical distribution, and the others (critics and exhibition people) talked about this for a while, and then turned to Monte, who said "I thought this was about the films that never got made .. I've had a couple in my head since the 70s that I could never get anyone to finance. I've been attending so many festivals lately, because I've been invited for retrospectives or to sit on juries, that I don't really feel like I've missed out on anything. Oh, well, let's see what I can say about this ..." (or words to that effect).

I would have preferred to hear him talk about the projects that never got made...

He was in fine form -- very much alive and kicking.

I'm prescient, I'll let you know how it is tomorrow. ;)

Actually, thanks for the heads-up, Julian.
