In Japan, they have 'New Year's' movies, from what I understand, which are movies designed to essentially make the audience go home feeling all warm inside. Miike was asked to do one of these movies, and this was the result.

If you've ever wanted to watch a weird little music that is oddly every bit as happy as its title, something with claymation, fun songs, and a very macabre plot turned on its ear, look no further than Takashi Miike's joyous Happiness of the Katakuris.

This movie is so great, I had to make an alternate ending for my Takashi Miike tribute and would like to share that with you now.

The above link is pretty much the opening and the ending cut together, but trust me, the rest of the film is every bit as fun and well worth tracking down (don't worry about being spoiled, you shouldn't be). If the charm of the above link appeals to you, go for it. It's worth it.

It should be noted that KATAKURIS is a re-make of the Korean film THE QUIET FAMILY. Miike did (re-)make it very much his own film.
