Title: New Andrzej Zulawski DVD
Description: Review courtesy of DVD Times:

Zulawski's definately underrepresented on DVD, at least in English speaking countries. The only English friendly discs are LA FIDELITE (Spanish and French imports), SZAMANKA (Russian import of the French dubbed version), POSSESSION (AB's release is definitive), and MY NIGHTS ARE MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN YOUR DAYS.
Studio Canal has a beautiful new master of THE IMPORTANCE OF LOVE but no English subs on the French or German discs.

Thanks for the heads-up!

I’m very excited about this release. I was actually checking if the Lunar Trilogy by Jerzy Zulawski would be out in English. As week ago I was surprised to find English translation of Vitezslav Nezval’s
Valerie and Her Week of Wonders...

YES!! Add me to those thanking you for this information, Timo. Awesome! This movie has been near the top of my list of unavailable must-sees ever since I read a Film Comment article on Zulawski a few (several?) years ago.
Thanks to Martin, too, of course, although that page at DVDTimes crashes my Safari browser every time I try to go to it. Is it a generally favorable review of the disc?
I've still only seen one Zulawski - POSSESSION, of course - and found it to be a fascinating and invaluable experience, although a mixed bag as a film.
One question: the Amazon specs say the SILVER GLOBE disc is fullscreen. Can I assume that's the proper presentation? I have trouble imagining someone bothering to put this movie out and then botching the image in such an obvious way.

Michael, it's a very favourable review of the disc (which I intend to purchase!), but I'll leave the final word comments posted after the review by a person monikered My Eyes!:

I had the good fortune to attend Second Run's recent London screening of this film, with Zulawski in attendance and, after the film, taking questions (some of which prompted quite charged, unequivocal responses).
It has to be said that the film is quite incredible. Anyone who liked the astonishing 'Possession' will not be disappointed. I do hope that this release is the beginning of an on-going relationship between Second Run and Zulawski, because more of his films deserve this kind of dedicated, passionate DVD treatment.
Well done to all involved. |
As for the ON THE SILVER GLOBE release, the cover art doesn't bode well for the quality of the release!
More releases from the same company:
Polart Distribution

The subtitled version of THE SILVER GLOBE that I have is fullscreen. Maybe it could be matted to 1.66:1.
How is the quality of PolArt's releases? They also list DIABEL as forthcoming. No cover art yet.
I'd love to see a translation of THE MEDIUM.

Does anyone know if Zulawski's La Femme Publique has been released in an English-friendly DVD anywhere? Secondly, did this film even get a theatrical release in any English-speaking territories?

I'd love to see a new transfer of VALERIE.

So art PolArt DVDs legit? A poster on the Amazon page for SILVER GLOBE states otherwise.

Hard to say. The poster's (Viva-Italy) only other entry is a review of the Russian Szamanka DVD. His review, however, isn't legit. It's been

I might have to chance it since I'm guessing PolArt doesn't send out review copies.

After a bit a searching I managed to find the original Polish releases for both SILVER GLOBE and DEVIL:

DVD from Czech Republic seems to be the best release, but unfortunately it’s not English friendly:

Eric, are those full screen caps? I had heard that the US releases were inferior because the original aspect ratios had been compromised (in contrast to the Polish DVDs...)
Eric Cotenas - October 18, 2007 08:44 PM (GMT)
No, they are widescreen (about 1.66:1 or a little less). The image is definitely soft and the subtitles are not that good. Some have written that they do not display correctly but my problem with them is the proofing. The subs in the previous version I had mention that "one fifth of the film is missing" while the new subs on the DVD say "1 5" which is unclear. I haven't compared them fully.
The "p" in the "presents" on the logo is slightly cropped but the bits of debris on the upper and lower mattes suggest a hard matte.

I know I'm not the only one who has ever gone on Amazon to see if a particular title has been released on video or DVD, only to find out it hasn't.
I've also wanted to see this on a nice DVD release and began to wonder if the service that Amazon offers has ever yielded any results. In particular, letting a studio know how many customers are waiting for a particular title.
Availability: NOT YET RELEASED: The studio is currently not producing this title, but to be notified when it is available, enter your e-mail address at right. You'll also be voting for this release; we'll let the studio know how many customers are waiting for this title.

I don't know either. The only titles I've seen this on were ones that were already announced like Warner's THE HAUNTING with a street date listed.
