I figured this would be best if this news wasn't buried in the ZOMBIES: THE BEGINNING thread. So strange to have this happen so quickly after the debut of his latest trailer. From his official Myspace.com fan site:

Another great master of Italian exploitation is gone. As Yvette Yzon (star of ZOMBIES THE BEGINNING, THE JAIL) informed us, the maestro of Italian cult cinema passed away earlier today. RIP Bruno, god bless you.... Your cinematic treasures will never be forgotten. Thank you for offering us countless hours of entertainment and enjoyment.
With love and repsect, Bruno Mattei Fan Club
PS: Funeral will take place at Rome, on the coming Thursday. More details will be posted. |

NO!!!!
I'm just in shock. I just watched STRIKE COMMANDO again the other day and have been discussing Mattei in a couple of different threads on here. As much as I mocked his work, it was out of love. He gave me a lot of entertainment.
RIP Mr. Mattei, and thanks for everything.

My all-time favorite filmmaker, Bruno Mattei, another legend gone. He seemed like a lovely person, I wish I could have met him. Hopefully his works will be appreciated more after his death (as it is the case with every artist who dies). Rest in piece Bruno, you will never be forgotten. :(

That's pretty sad-making. I'm not ashamed to cop that Hell of the Living Dead is one of my favorite movies. In a non-ironic sort of way. Sort of.
And speaking of which, I'm sure this means some knob is going to immediately announce a remake... timer starts now.

From the full screen cut UK version on VHS rental in the early 80s I had no interest in Hell Of The Living Dead, but watching the trailer a few years later on an Australian VHS Palace Pictures label made the film suddenly seem very exciting. I worked hard to track down an uncut wide screen Dutch VHS which was exactly how I should have enjoyed the film in the first place. Long ago sold on eBay and upgraded to the DVD, I still remember how much difference cut vs uncut made to the entertainment value of this film. Mattei's greatest film. Rest in peace.
