Title: Mr. Lucas a guiding spirit behind Bava Box Set
Description: see NY Times New DVDs article
Michael Blanton - April 10, 2007 02:52 PM (GMT)
Tim Lucas got quite a nice write up in today's NY Times New DVD releases (
see link below (registration required)) in which David Kehr mentioned Tim at least three times and noted that "Mr. Lucas is a [if not the]guiding spirit behind "The Mario Bava Collection, Volume 1," and referred to Video Watchdog as "his handsomely produced fanzine."
Of course we know that Donna has a lot to do with the look of VW.
Congratulations Donna & Tim!

Uh oh... ;)

Fanzine? FANZINE???!!! Was Video Watchdog EVER a fanzine? Hasn't it always been, ummm, y'know, like, a real MAGAZINE? A publication? A periodical? Bound copies in the library reference room and all? (Oh well, at least Kehr mentioned it. Hopefully, some Times readers will get curious and seek it out.)
(The other good news in that column is the release of "The Untouchables" Season 1 set--almost as much of a must-have as the Bava set. I can hear the theme music blaring and Walter Winchell's staccato narration as I'm typing...B))

Yeah, I was like isn't VW a serious critical magazine with the love of fantastic cinema.
I like to think of it as a journal of film fantastique. ;)

In addition to all those things, and the fact that it's my favourite mag in the history of forever, I must also salute the magazine for its handy size. Fits perfectly into my pocket and thus accompanies me on my regular trips to late-night cinema screenings so I've got something to read in the bar beforehand*. It's not just my movie bible, it's part of my day-to-day routine!
But anyway, nice to see Tim getting some good write-up there.
*Yes, I know, most people would opt for talking to someone, but I've got no friends and tend to end up in the cinema by myself. Quite why none of my buddies wish to see a midnight screening of CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON in 3D is beyond me.

Well, if the innocent use of a little word like "fanzine" can prompt such an unexpected groundswell of love and appreciation, I'm must admit I'm grateful for it. Thanks, Davy!

Over the years, I found VW to be perfect bar reading... like Alan mentioned, it fits nicely in the back pocket, takes up less bar space... and sometimes leads to interesting conversation when a lovely asks "What are you reading?"
Thanks for the fanzine, Tim!
Ahem... and Donna. Sorry.

Not to mention the healthy coating of laminate on the cover, which offers an easy wipe-off for Buffalo sauce and beer. :D

I hate it when that happens.
