Title: DOA: DEAD OR ALIVE (2006)
Description: Whatever happened to this film?
Brian Camp - March 16, 2007 04:25 PM (GMT)
DOA: DEAD OR ALIVE - videogame adaptation/Charlie's Angels on steroids led by Jaime Pressly/wisecracks/lots of CGI/direction by HK stalwart Corey Yuen. Someone posted a trailer link here well over a year ago. It apparently went to theaters all over the rest of the planet but not here in the U.S. IMDB lists a U.S. release date of June 22, 2007. Is that DVD or theatrical?
Anyone?
Thanks.

I was aallllmoooost tempted recently to buy the Australian DVD version, but I didn't. I actually went to EZYDVD specifically to buy just DOA, but I bought the 2nd season of THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN and the anamorphic DEATH RIDES A HORSE instead! LOL!
For those interested in the Australian version, you can find it right here for under $14 (US Dollars):
DOA @ EZYDVDIt must be really bad to not be released here yet but, then again, who would've thought otherwise?

The DOA HK disc, from EDKO, is available now for anyone that can't wait until June. At the Weinstein Co website, they have it listed as 'June 22 Nationwide', which to me, suggests theatrical release. CommingSoon has it listed for theatrical release on that date, too, for what that's worth. It's a summer kinda movie, so that's about the right spot. FF 2 opens June 15 and EVAN ALMIGHTY opens June 22 also.

It was showing in Hong Kong in October when I was there for a few days, but only at one theatre so I went and saw the latest Jackie Chan film instead. I'm kinda looking forward to it though - it looks stupid but Corey Yuen does stupid like no other - SO CLOSE was AMAZING!

Hey, I like SO CLOSE! If DOA has 1/10 the emotional punch of SO CLOSE, I'll be impressed (but you know it doesn't).

SO CLOSE is one of my favorite films - but it's still stupid! ;)

Sorry, to bump this thread back up, but , rather than wait for the “theatrical release,” I bought the Edko disc of DOA in Chinatown and watched it last night. Ummm…what can I say? I’m glad Corey Yuen is working, but I sure wish he was making more movies like SO CLOSE and YES MADAM than stuff like THE TRANSPORTER and DOA. Action-wise, something was missing. I never got a sense of virtuosity from anybody. There was either too much CGI or too many stunt doubles. Or too much of both.
I will say this, though. Jaime Pressly is quite something. Just the right mix of pulchritude, southern sass, and a sense of humor. She would have been great in ‘70s exploitation movies. She certainly could have given Claudia Jennings a run for her money. In fact, she would have been great in GRINDHOUSE—in either movie. If she’d played one of the stuntwomen in DEATH PROOF, either Rosario Dawson’s or Tracie Thoms’ part, my reaction to the piece would have been way more favorable. I think Pressly could be doing a lot more interesting movies, either action or contemporary southern noir—or comedy, she’s very funny—than she’s been doing. But nobody’s writing scripts for a slightly off-center actress like her, someone with genuine regional character. (The scenes with her wrestler father in DOA, played by a wrestler named Kevin Nash, were among the most entertaining.)
Aside from Pressly, the only people in the DOA cast I’d ever heard of are Eric Roberts, Devon Aoki, Collin Chou, Kane Kosugi and Robin Shou. When did Eric Roberts start sporting Richard Gere’s old haircut? I like Roberts but he’s getting way too craggy and tired (think Kris Kristofferson—today!) to play a smooth, muscular supervillain like the character here. I would have loved it if they’d gotten Van Damme to play the part. Or even Seagal! And Devon Aoki? What’s her appeal? I don’t get it. Why couldn’t they have hired a real Japanese actress for the part, e.g. Aya Ueto from AZUMI or Yukie Nakama from SHINOBI or any number of models-turned-actress found in Power Rangers counterparts like Ayumi Kinoshita from “Dekaranger”?
Written by J.F. Lawton, better known for UNDER SIEGE and the TV series, “V.I.P.” He also wrote PRETTY WOMAN, which starred Eric’s sister, Julia.
All in all, not unwatchable and certainly better than it might have been thanks to Pressly, but not a must-see.

Well, she was nominated for an Emmy as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her regular role on MY NAME IS EARL, so somebody is writing some funny scripts for her.

Yeah, but is there any kung fu in it? :D

Oh, I get her appeal. She just needs to exclusively play mermaids and sirens and never speak, that's all. It's very simple...

I watched DOA a few weekends ago, and I thought it was OK. The guy who wrote it wrote, among other things, episodes of that VIP tv show, which is what this feels like. The acting is terrible except for Pressly (who steals the movie), the plot that is there is pretty dumb (but how many Cory Yuen films feature stellar plots?), and the action is pretty fakey looking. But I still enjoyed it. Kane Kosugi is morphing into an exact copy of his dad.
My full review is posted here, along with lots of gratuitous crotch shot screencaps:
DOA: Dead or Alive (Teleport City)

AICN put up a news item today stating that the film is scheduled to come out June 15th.

Well, this did open in theaters today with no advertising at all on TV (from what I saw). You would think they would throw some ads on during a UFC event on Spike or something.
Funny story - my local paper incorrectly listed the title in their "Releases this week" as DOA - DEAD ON ARRIVAL. Might be pretty apt.
Marty McKee - June 15, 2007 08:42 PM (GMT)
It's playing at only one of the two multiplexes here, but getting seven daily showings this weekend. It'll be gone in three weeks.
William S. Wilson - June 15, 2007 09:31 PM (GMT)
Three weeks? I doubt it will last two.
William S. Wilson - June 17, 2007 05:03 PM (GMT)
Oh man, this thing bombed hard. Then again, I saw no ads for it at all. Why did they even bother to release it?
DOA: Dead or Alive
Weekend gross: $232,000
Screens:505
Per screen average: $459
I'm going to revise my original two week prediciton and say this will be gone by next Friday.

In the 80's DOA: Dead or Alive would have been golden. Especially this time of year. Things change.
Dan Helmick - June 18, 2007 10:19 PM (GMT)
I'm not expecting FONG SAI-YUK, but still I've been dying to see this. Unfortunately, in the case of Chicago, it's been handled like nuclear waste...just a handful of suburban multiplexes about as far out from the city as Argonne National Laboratory, which would take me nearly 3 hours travel each way.
I might make the trip, but I'm really, really going to hate myself for it.
William S. Wilson - June 22, 2007 06:19 PM (GMT)
Well, it is gone from here. Almost as if it never even existed.
Dan Helmick - June 22, 2007 06:56 PM (GMT)
Here too. I decided to spare myself the three-stage bus journey, and instead took in a local revival of LABYRINTH.

I think that The Weinstein Company should henceforth release all of their films in this manner. It's money well spent and ensures that when these titles eventually hit Best Buy shelves without any fanfare or announcement of any kind, they will at least have the distinction of NOT being direct to video releases.
Honest question (in lieu of a money bet): Who here honestly believes that The Weinstein Company WON'T file for bankruptcy within the next year or two?
As for D.O.A.: DEAD OR ALIVE, it's playing two showtimes at a local multiplex and I'm tempted to catch the Sunday morning matinee just to score a ticket stub and always be able to say that I was there.
Marty McKee - June 22, 2007 07:38 PM (GMT)
DOA is gone here too, even though NANCY DREW is playing on two screens. Go figure.

I don't think they will, but I don't think The Weinstein Company will be playing the same game they are now either. I think it'll be heavily anchored around Dimension and direct to video releases, and they'll lean on Genius' other distribution deals for most of their revenue.

I wonder how many more Weinstein Company titles MGM will agree to release. They had a similar deal with Cannon in the early '80 and after one hit (BREAKIN'), one modest success (REVENGE OF THE NINJA) and a string of flops, MGM decreed enough is enough and refused to issue any more Golan & Globus productions. So far, there hasn't even been one successful Weinstein/MGM release. I'm sure the staff over at TWC is awaiting the Friday totals for 1408 with trepidation.

I missed its UK engagements, where it was playing nearest to me at a multiplex that I just thought was slightly too rough an area to bother - although I probably would have had the Cinema to myself. I offest this by really knowing that I would watch it at home on my video projector, and duly received the limited edition packaging version from play.com.
I have all the video game version of D.O.A. from the original on the Sega Saturn via PS One & Two, Dreamcast, Xbox through to Xbox 360, and fondly remember my girlfriend and I playing the original Arcade game at the long defunct Namco Wonderworld off Picadilly Circus (now
Sugar Reef Bar & Restaurant and marvelling at the use of the Virtua Fighter technology and the game's sumo-like Ring Out where you pretty much exploded. Am I qualified to like the movie as a fan?
Loved the cast of girls, expected better from the director (So Close was more than fine), so must blame the script. OK, but not great. Would watch again for the simple fun it did provide. If it had taken itself a little bit more seriously...
