Title: Warner "Cult Camp Classics Vol 1-4"
Description: something for everyone . . .
Wade Sowers - March 14, 2007 10:47 PM (GMT)
. . . according to The Digital Bits, on June 26th Warner will release four CULT CAMP (unfair to some of these) CLASSICS sets; US$29.98 per set, US$14.97 individually:
Vol 1: SCI-FI THRILLERS: ATTACK OF THE 50 FT. WOMAN, GIANT BEHEMOTH, & QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE . . .
Vol 2: WOMEN IN PERIL: THE BIG CUBE, CAGED, & TROG . . .
Vol 3: TERRORIZED TRAVELERS: HOT RODS TO HELL, SKYJACKED, & ZERO HOUR
Vol 4: HISTORICAL EPICS: LAND OF THE PHARAOHS, COLOSSUS OF RHODES (Sergio Leone!!), & THE PRODIGAL . . .
. . . this collection certainly redefines "grab bag" but I suspect I will end up getting them all . . .

Let's just hope they're letterboxed. Land of the Pharoahs is a guilty pleasure (Hawks and Faulkner!) and of course how can you show a Leone film full frame?

Not like it's Brentwood. Or 1999. I'm sure Warners will do fine with these.

Fantastic news! I'm greatly excited about COLOSSUS OF RHODES and QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE, but most of them sound great!

A subsequent DVD Drive-In update claims that eleven of the 12 films will be anamorphic widescreen, with CAGED being full frame. The site also mentions that there may be a few audio commentaries as well. Dare we hope for a Zsa Zsa Gabor track for QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE? There is also a link there that shows the 12 individual covers.

DVD Drive-In has updated their spread on Warner's cult films to reveal the following audio commentaries:
COLOSSUS OF RHODES--Leone scholar/author Christopher Frayling.
QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE-- the queen herself, Laurie Mitchell, and Tom Weaver.
ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN--Co-star Yvette Vickers and Tom Weaver.
LAND OF THE PHARAOHS--Peter Bogdanovich, with Howard Hawks interview clips.
THE GIANT BEHEMOTH--special effects artists Dennis Muren and Phil Tippet.
THE PRODIGAL--historian Dr. Drew Casper (who is this person?).
The other titles in these sets apparently have no commentaries.

Well, I get the vibe that he had a hand in crafting his own
WIKIPEDIA entry...

I'm really looking forward to Yvette Vickers' 50-FOOT WOMAN commentary. I hope she talks a lot about Allison Hayes (in addition to talking about her own career).

Hot Rods To Hell! Wow - I can finall replace the lost VHS I made off Australian TV 1982 on my first experience of all Night movies brodcasting (sadly missed nowadays with infomercials and phone-in Quizzes being all the rage in the UK). This will be a double bill Dana Andrews in Night/Curse Of The Demon when I get the Hot Rod disc!

HOT RODS TO HELL will be on TCM sometime next week, I think Friday night. I saw it listed in TV Guide. I saw it in a theater--it was on a double bill with the Matt Helm pic, THE AMBUSHERS. (Neither film was a particular crowd-pleaser at the time.) I did see it again on TV years later, but I don't know that I'm nostalgic enough for it to want to own it on DVD. But it does offer early Mimsy Farmer. And it was Dana Andrews' and Jeanne Crain's fourth (and last) film together in 22 years.

Got to say, I caught COLOSSUS OF RHODES a few years ago and thought it was a colossal bore, even by pepla standards. The casting is really, really off. The very end is fairly entertaining though. I would temper expectations.
Still, this is good news.
