Title: Italian exploitation titles
Description: ... that urgently need digital treatment

Lefteris Tsoutsos - December 23, 2004 04:43 AM (GMT)
Which Italian exploitation films in your opinion should be released in a special edition dvd but still remain unavailable? Please write down your top 15 or top10 wish list, including reasons why these titles should be released! Here are the ones that I would like to see in the coming year. Please try to include only titles that haven't been announced for a possible release.

1. VIOLENT ROME (I insist that it's the most violent Italian crime! Merli is GOD!)
2. GIALLO A VENEZIA (shame that it hasn't got a dvd release yet, considering it's reputation..)
3. CRIMES OF THE BLACK CAT (giallo masterpiece)
4. TEENAGE PROSTITUTION RACKET (highly sought after title among euro-collectors and a really nasty movie)
5. MURDER TO THE TUNE OF 7 BLACK NOTES (All Fulci gialli must be released on dvd)
6. THE IGUANA WITH THE TONGUE OF FIRE (Fredda's bloody and ultra-rare giallo, one of the best I have seen in this genre)
7. THE LAST SHARK (easily blows JAWS away!)
8. SO SWEET SO DEAD (a definition of the giallo genre, a real masterpiece that words fail to describe)
9. DEATH STEPS IN THE DARK (Italo-Greek production, some great gore, nice settings & atmosphere, great Ortolani score- got to love this one)
10. DEATH WALKS IN HIGH HEELS (Ercoli is a GREAT director- a real genious!)
11. SS CAMP 5 WOMEN'S HELL (One of the few films that managed to shock me)
12. WOMEN'S CAMP 119 (Because it is SICK! And because it's one of Bruno's best!)
13. NEXT! (A masterpiece that looks so bad in fullscreen!)
14. DOOR TO SILENCE (Because it's Fulci!)
15. EXTERMINATORS OF THE YEAR 3000 (Trash for trash's sake- more
post-apocalypse films should come out on dvd!)

the above are among my fave euro-cult movies- I own most of them in ex-rental vhs and desperately want to upgrade them.

TEENAGE PROSTITUTION RACKET - Raro Video has this one their list of releases for early 2005!

As for my picks, in no particular order, I would like to see the following:

1. The rest of the Nico Giraldi series - COP IN BLUE JEANS, the first entry, made it onto a great DVD in Italy and I wish the others in the series would get the same treatment (with an English option).

2. BLOODSTAINED BUTTERFLY - Another one released in Italy in Italian only. I caught this superior giallo recently and would love to see it on DVD with an English option (subs or dub).

3. FROM CORLEONE TO BROOKLYN - basically I would like to see every Umberto Lenzi crime film hit DVD, but this one in particular as I have a VHS that is quite possibly the most cropped transfer I have ever seen.

4. HIGHWAY RACER - I agree with your assesment of "Merli is GOD" and would love to see all of his films hit disc. This one for two reasons; one: Merli goes it sans moustache, two: there is an amazing "stunt gone wrong" at the end of the film where a guy gets smacked hard by a car that I just have to see in crystal clear quality.

5. 7 HOURS OF VIOLENCE - taut George Hilton thriller that throws a bit of everything in there, including karate!

6. ROBOWAR & SHOCKING DARK - the xerox cinema of Bruno Mattei at its finest! ROBOWAR is a scene for scene knock off of PREDATOR that mixes in a bit of ROBOCOP. SHOCKING DARK is ALIENS to a "T" with some TERMINATOR thrown in at the end. They don't get better than this.

7. THUNDER WARRIOR series - call me crazy but I love all three of these Mark Gregory, RAMBO-lite vehicles. Director/producer Fabrizio De Angelis knows how to use the slo-mo.

8. RATMAN - tiny man Nelson de la Rosa recently gained more noteriety by being Pedro Martinez's good luck charm during the recent World Series, so what better time than now for a DVD release? Plus you have Janet Agren and David Warbeck in it.

9. MURDER TO THE TUNE OF THE SEVEN BLACK NOTES - one of my Fulci favorites. I want to see it firmly established on DVD before Tarantino rips it off.

10. ANTHROPOPHAGUS - a guy can dream, right?

I agree. ROBOWAR is among the top-10 of 80's Italy in my book. How about
a STRIKE COMMANDO double-bill DVD while we are at it?

2.SO SWEET SO PERVERSE..Lenzi giallo with Carol Baker, scant release on tape in Italy.
3.SWEET BODY OF DEBORAH..excellent giallo again scantily released on tape in Italy.
4.AAA MASSAGRIATTRICE BELLA SERVICIA OFFRESI..extremely rare giallo never released anywhere, managed to watch a choppy cinema print in Italy in the seventies.
5.4 FLIES ON GREY VELVET..keeps getting rumoured for release,I love this film.
6.THE WITCH IN LOVE..Damiano Damiani's super excellent horror movie with Richard Johnson.
7.LADY OF THE LAKE..supremely effective giallo from Luigi Bazzoni, scant release in Italy, stunning film.
8.YOUR VICE IS A LOCKED ROOM AND ONLY I HAVE THE KEY..Sergio Martino giallo deserves an official release,as does..
9.SUSPICIOUS DEATH OF A MINOR..again scantily released in Italy,an excellent giallo.
10.TROPIC OF CANCER..just as a tribute to ANTHONY STEFFEN,also an effective giallo in it's own way.

Before you ask,I do own all but one of these films on tape, all are letterboxed except SO SWEET SO PERVERSE.

I second the call for VIOLENT ROME

More Giraldis? They'll all be out there in Italian along with other related Milian titles soon enough. That's probably good enough for me if prioritizing is the game.

I REALLY want the bizarre, phantasmagoric politico-sex satire/satyriasias flick by Fulci, "All'onorevole piacciono le donne (Nonostante le apparenze... e purché la nazione non lo sappia)"/THE EROTICIST. I just want to see how they'd fit the title on the box! Beyond that, this is a treasure trove of overheated Salvador-Dali-Fellini fantasy sequences, funny and scary at once; take no prisoners sacred cow slaughtering potshot polemical low blow laughs (Lionel Stander as Vatican Cardinal and Mafia liaison!); and dazzlingly silly cinematic technique for its own sake; not to mention, x-ray spex-visionary girl hunting from beginning to end. That's the dramatic premise: an uptight conservative family values politico gets possessed by his suppressed libido one morning and runs amok like a hot and bothered, frisky feeling Godzilla (albeit in the human frame of silly Lando Buzzanca). This is one video itch I have got to scratch.

A watchable (don't care about extras) edition of Giulio Questi's ARCANA would be welcome. I'd simply like to see this properly once and for all.

I've been hoping that someone would put on DVD:
As others have mentioned-
DA CORLEONE A BROOKLYN which is one of my favorite Mafia films. Bravo Enzo!
VIOLENT ROME - a masterpiece along with ITALIA A MANO ARMATA

But some other cinematic delights include:
HANDS OVER THE CITY Francesco Rosi's great follow up to Salvatore Guilliano, whihc explores the Black Hand in detail.

THE IRON MAYOR
FATHER OF THE GODFATHERS
THE PENITENT - Pasquale Squitieri's superior godfather trilogy! I have been praying for these most of all. Amazing Morricone scores and a more genuine view of the Mafia (I'm told) than Coppola's.

MACHINE GUN MCCAIN - the finest genre feast of legit thesps to date.

...and as many Fernando Di Leo films as I can get my hands on:
LA MALA ORDINA
LIVE LIKE A COP DIE LIKE A MAN
GANGSTER '70
MILANO CALIBRO 9
Il BOSS

William S. Wilson - December 25, 2004 12:27 AM (GMT)
Good news! Raro also has IL BOSS (doubled up with KILLERS VS. KILLERS) scheduled for an early 2005 DVD release as part of their on going Fernando Di Leo line. Other 2005 Di Leo titles include SLAUGHTER HOTEL, THE SEDUCTION, NICK THE STING and my favorite MR. SCARFACE.

James Cheney - December 25, 2004 07:29 AM (GMT)
I'll try and drum up some support for HANDS OVER THE CITY when I post a review here in a couple of weeks. Just found an old Italian tape of this title. Given that Steiger was in it, there must be an American dub of this as well, right?

The Di Leos (written and/or directed) are all or most coming out steadily with plenty of extras under the Raro imprint (or Alan Young). That's the best way to go for the forseeable. You just need a Cyberhome or other all region to play them, English tracks included as far as I know.

Timo Raita - December 25, 2004 03:12 PM (GMT)
Ok, here's my top 10:

3 Sergio Sollima: il Diavolo nel Cervello and the spy films
4 Tinto Brass: l'Urlo, il Disco Volante and Col Cuore in Gola
5 Alberto Cavallone: Uomo la Donna e la Bestia, etc...
6 Mario Bava: Kill, Baby... Kill!
7 Renato Polselli: The Truth According to Satan, etc...
8 the Three Fantastic Supermen films
