Setting a date with no one attached? Always a good sign. Odds on it starring Will Smith? Via Dark Horizons:

Now, Boxoffice Mojo reports that 20th Century Fox has staked out May 9th of next year for release of a remake of the project. One posting is hardly conclusive even though BOM is very reliable, but the report was then confirmed by Fox to FirstShowing.net.

From the sounds of it though this is purely concept stage for now as no-one is attached

Well, if FOX were to buck current trends and get a good director and keep the themes of the original film intact, this might not be so bad. But then again, I'm speaking of an alternate universe, where people who do remakes, Scorcese and Jackson aside, actually care.

"It's a cookbook!"
"WHAT?!"
"Just kidding...it's a cure for cancer."

It actually sounds like a pretty solid idea, but one with a lot of built-in potential pitfalls...tone, intent. How harshly do you approach contemporary politics without alienating (heh) half of your audience?

Step one in the right direction would be casting Adrien Brody as Klaatu.

Bob Gutowski - February 22, 2007 09:42 PM (GMT)
Or Jude Law. But not Vin Diesel.

Dale Sherman - February 22, 2007 10:44 PM (GMT)
Ah, I can see Bruce Willis now in the climatic chase from the hospital to the ship ...

Good! Cuz he's the only mainstream actor I can tolerate! Oh wait, that's a silly thing to say... :ph43r:

Yeah, it is...are you on crack?

Bernie Jacobs - February 23, 2007 08:15 PM (GMT)
What are the odds they'll keep this a low-key, thoughful and intelligent story rather than pumping it up with chases, explosions and CGI?

Slim to none?

Remember this was 'a low-key, thoughful and intelligent story' where people got distintergrated from a 7 foot tall robot's deathray.

It would be nice if they played up the original story's ("Farewell to the Master") angle.

Anybody know who the D.P. is? The trailer has a real nice look, and IMDB ain't tellin' (which is obviously an 'oopsie!' as the credit list is pretty complete, otherwise).
