Title: TV terror flicks hitting DVD
William S. Wilson - February 18, 2007 05:53 PM (GMT)
New company Wildeye Releasing have unleashed TV movies MANEATERS ARE LOOSE (1978) with Tom Skeritt and SHARK KILL (1976) on DVD. I've never seen or heard of either one so would anyone recommend them? They are 70s TV movies so they must be good right? Best of all, they are $9.99 each! According to their website, they have the TV movies CRAWLSPACE (1972) and THE DEVIL'S DAUGHTER (1972) lined up for future release.

I saw SHARK KILL, which is an enjoyable but unexceptional JAWS rip-off starring Richard Ynguez (from THE DEADLY TOWER) and Richard Foronjy (pre-REPO MAN). Foronjy played a character named Banducci and I remember stealing that name for characters in a couple of my early short stories.

This is the first time I've ever seen films advertised as "classics" with no clue given as to who is in them.
"Oh yeah, that's the one with 'Banducci.' Sold!"

Get out of my head, Tim Lucas!

I picked up a double-pack of "ANTS" and "TARANTULAS - THE DEADLY CARGO" at my local Ralph's supermarket a few weeks ago. The total price for both DVD's was $6.99!

I've seen the SHARK KILL and MANEATERS are loose DVDs.
Absolutely awful discs; the quality is about the same as a 4th generation VHS bootleg. They appear to have originated from extremely worn and faded 16mm prints shown on a sheet with a defective projector and recorded with a video camera at EP.
Yes, they are really THAT bad.
Darren Gross - February 19, 2007 05:43 PM (GMT)
They're clearly not authorized by anyone having anything to do with the films themselves.
None of the packages use any of the actors to market them, and the network, producers and production people are not boasted on the packaging.
The only difference between these and the 4th generation off-air or 16mm dupes that turn up in allegedly public domain boxes...is the presumed air of these being official, authorized or being made with access to original elements.
Extremely disappointing on all fronts, as there definitely is money to be made (and an audience to be pleased) by releasing 70's genre TV movies on disc in pristine quality but this is not it.

This is disappointing. The
Fangoria online article led me to believe that these were fully licensed releases; at least 3 were films owned by CBS/Paramount, so it looked like perhaps they had made a package deal. Too bad to hear it looks like just another squatting operation.

That cover for MANEATERS ARE LOOSE is part of the poster for ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES.

Any chance of seeing "STRAYS" on DVD? My wife loves that one - it's so amazingly stupid.

I recall CRAWLSPACE being better than average and really creepy.
I'd like to see BAD RONALD, THE EYES OF CHARLES SAND, THE LOVE WAR & SATAN'S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS again at least once before I punt the pail.

SATAN'S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS (the original) is widely available on various budget dvds. It's still goofy fun.
I finally got to see (must have missed it at the time - I usually watched all of these mftv movies at the time) the much-lauded BAD RONALD about 2 years ago. I fear its a case of the classic "had to be there and the right age". Which, of course, means that they're remaking it...
No point in listing all the great mftv's I'd like to see: it's an old topic for me on these boards and the list that provides a crutch for my failing memory is at home at the moment anyway - so I'll just free associate.
I was thinking recently about THE POSSESSED (1977, with Harrison Ford) and how scary my 10 year old self found it. It had a videotape release which I checked out about 12 years or so ago and still found it worthwhile, so I'd love to see that...
Anyone who suffered through the recent THAT GIRL marathon (talk abvout a show about NOTHING, this had SEINFELD beat decades before, but not in a GOOD way!) may want to check out SCREAM PRETTY PEGGY if it's ever on DVD for the hilarious sight of Donald Hollinger in drag (which I guess is a spoiler).
I'm hoping I can see the run of Quinn Martin's TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED (not the Roald Dahl show, which I'm currently enjoying) again someday - not because I expect it will be good (in fact, I'm pretty sure it's not) but simply for the nostalgia. Oh, and seeing the mftv pilot THE WORLD BEYOND again, with its infamous mudman that scared me speechless, would reallly allow me to rest easy in my tomb!

I'm with you on BAD RONALD.
I'd also like to see CROWHAVEN FARM...
And non-horror made for TV fair like:
CHILDREN OF THE LOTUS EATER (with Pete Duel)
GO ASK ALICE
THE GIRL WHO CAME GIFT WRAPPED
SECOND CHANCE (with Brian Keith)
CALL HER MOM (with Connie Stevens)
