Title: UNA SULL'ALTRA
Description: Severin's DVD
Christian Keller - February 17, 2007 01:56 PM (GMT)
Last night I received the shipping confirmation for Fulci's UNA SULL'ALTRA which was released by Severin under the title
PERVERSION STORY. Since it will take the disc a while to make it across the big pond and I'm looking forward to it a lot I'd like to know if someone here already had the chance to take a look at the DVD. I couldn't find a review on the web so I thought I might ask the experts over here. Any comments on the DVD's quality?
Many thanks!
Chris

Isn't PERVERSION STORY the actual English title of another giallo with Brett Halsey?
Martin Brooks - February 18, 2007 05:37 AM (GMT)
Yes, that's correct! Doesn't this one feature the "trumpets of the apocalypse"?!?!?

Anyone know if something happened with this? It appeared on Netflix. I put it on the top on my queue, then it suddenly dropped into my saved list with an unknown release date. Is this just Netflix?

My DVD arrived yesterday - I haven't had time to look at the movie yet but I have already enjoyed the excellent bonus soundtrack CD!

Just got my copy and it's a beauty. Crikey, that sex scene between Jean Sorel and Marisa Mell goes on forever in this version!

Yes, for the record, it reappeared at the bottom of my queue. I'm still a little curious what happened, but mostly I'm glad I noticed, so I can get the movie next week without trouble.

The Latarnia thread linked by Michael directly above is quite informative. From the description I'm not too bothered by the absent footage, and I'm happy to hear about the lengthier luurve footage with Marisa Mell, a sure sign that the French (according to the Latarnia thread) valued extended primo Eurocult bonking footage over shots of someone flagging a train - and do I blame them? With the understanding that a lot of these Eurocult titles were released in many different territories, with variant levels of sleaze and narrative intruige rejiggered for each, I likely won't miss that absent footage - or if I eventually do, the soundtrack CD will go a great distance towards soothing my anguish.

I think you're selling the missing material short if you describe it as "shots of someone flagging a train" - there's considerably more to it than that, although yes, there are certainly bits that are unimportant in the grand scheme of things. If anyone's interested, I'm compiling a comparison between the Severin DVD and the English 103-minute VHS dupe I own. I've currently made my way through the first 25 minutes, and the results are quite
interesting.

Michael, thank you -- I'm going to use your guide to the two versions as I watch the Severin disc. It's been some time since I've viewed the English-language version, so this will be helpful.

Glad to be of service. I hope to get the whole thing completed within the next couple of days.

My full comparison, which you can read
here, is now complete. In total, around 4 minutes and 29 seconds of material is found on the Severin DVD that is not present on my VHS dupe, while the Severin DVD is missing out on 10 minutes and 11 seconds of footage included on the VHS dupe.

A hearty thanks for the comparison, Michael! I had no idea the cuts were so substantial to the new DVD. Looks like I can't dump my old DVDR after all.

My full review is now up at
DVD Times. I've also made my comparison available in HTML form
here, with some handy screen captures to illustrate some of the differences.

A really solid review and comparison, Mike. You've done outstanding work.

I wonder if we should still be referring to the PERVERSION STORY cut as the French print. The opening logo suggests its a German print.
I dug out my letterboxed French tape LA MACHINATION (video burned insert title) from Proserpine (1985) and unlike the Severin disc it has French language credits which makes sense since its an Italian-French-Spanish co-production. I've only looked at the first couple minutes but the French tape has the first instance of missing footage mentioned in elsewhere. It contains the extended bit of expository conversation after the closing of the briefcase, the San Francisco shots as Sorel drives home, the exteriors of the home leading to the shot of Marisa Mell watching him arrive.
I'll keep watching with a printout of the differences in hand.
I'm curious to see this Greek release that combines the extended erotic scenes with the rest of the footage missing from the Severin version.
I wonder how the Spanish version looks of this film since it was a Spanish co-production.
