Title: UFO DVDs

Wait, UFO is on DVD?  That show was a huge favorite when I was a kid but don't think I've seen it since.  Now I have to decide whether I want to keep those memories or watch the DVDs and risk finding out this was really bad.

You know you want to watch it.

UFO's been on DVD for several years. It was originally released in both the UK and the US in two separate box sets; I wound up getting the UK PAL sets a few years ago because 1) Benson's World had them on sale for about half the cost of the overpriced US sets, and at that time they were still offering free worldwide shipping, and 2) the packaging of the UK sets was much nicer than the US sets, which consisted of clear 4-disc Amaray cases with plain-looking cover inserts (the UK sets were in cardboard digipaks and slipcovers, and included nice booklets and a set of picture postcards). Since then, A&E's repackaged both US sets into one of their ubiquitous Megasets, which is still IMHO overpriced, but you can get it a lot cheaper if you check out some of the Amazon Marketplace sellers.

I never realized until recently that Gabrielle Drake, who played the extremely attractive, purple-wigged Lt. Ellis, was British cult musician Nick Drake's sister.

EDIT: Post split out from 24 thread, and merged into new topic.

This came up in the 24 thread so I'm pulling it out. Looks like DVDs of UFO came out in 2002 but I completely missed them. As a kid I loved this show and even had toys, comics and I seem to remember a novelization of some kind. First disc is now at top of my Netflix queue and hope I won't be disappointed.

I've watched all of the first set and am currently about a quarter of the way through the second one. I thought the series took a little while to really hit its stride, so I'd recommend sticking with it for a bit longer if you're underwhelmed by the first disc in the first set.

UFO was ok, but it was no STAR MAIDENS.

Ah, but 'Star Maidens' was no 'Raumpatrouille' ('Space Patrol'/'Space Cruiser Orion').

Just finished the first disc and was indeed underwhelmed but thanks to Dave's comment will go at least one or two discs more. The first episode in particular just dragged and seemed too campy (cheesy music, numerous shots of female rears) while not making much sense. But I can see where something a bit more interesting could develop.

You said it! They had it all!! A groovy theme tune, Flying saucers that run on Alka-Seltzer and space hipsters doing the interstellar crab-dance! Great stuff!!

Re: UFO: I was moderately entertained, but not exactly blown away, by disc one, too. Definitely stick with the series. I've been watching it for the past few weeks now, and it keeps getting better and better, in both writing and direction, starting with disc two. We learn a lot more about the characters, who were pretty cardboard on disc one, as well a lot of background info on how SHADO came to be. I'm only on disc four, but I think it's a blast, and I'm in it for the remainder. BTW, I love the "cheesy" music! The rears aren't bad, either! LOL

Keep in mind that JASON OF STAR COMMAND's cast members included Sid Haig, Tamara Dobson, Rosanne Katon, Francine York, and James Doohan - as well as stop motion animation sequences & quality visual effects by various soon-to-be ILM staffers. That's uncommon enough for a low budget Saturday morning kids' show, let alone one of its era.

Oh, man. All this cheese and no crackers!

PS. "Captain Podly"! I think I have a new nickname for Big Daddy.
