Title: Midseason deadpool update

Lisa Larkin - January 3, 2007 01:34 AM (GMT)
The website brilliantbutcancelled.com has added midseason replacement shows to the dead pool.

Update on the fall shows:

VANISHED and 3 LBS are now officially dead. SIX DEGREES, JUSTICE and THE NINE are in a coma. I'm debating whether to purge my THE NINE backlog on my DVR. No point wasting my time with it if the series is going to be cancelled without any resolution to the story.

The Anne Heche show MEN IN TREES is, surprisingly, on the thriving list. I've seen so little promotion for the show, I thought it was sure to be gone by midseason. STUDIO 60 and BROTHERS & SISTERS are also thriving. I couldn't bare more than five minutes of the latter due to my extreme allergic reaction to Callista Flockhart. No surprise that HEROES and UGLY BETTY are thriving. These are the two breakout hits of the season. JERICHO is thriving though I'm personally disappointed in it after a strong start. The late launching DAY BREAK was pulled after five episodes due to low ratings. It hasn't been officially cancelled but its prospects don't look good.

Among the midseason replacement shows that haven't aired yet, only two are of immediate interest to me: KNIGHTS OF PROSPERITY [which debuts tomorrow night] and ANDY BARKER, P.I.

Here's a clip from KNIGHTS OF PROSPERITY:

I don't know anything about ANDY BARKER, P.I except that it stars Andy Richter, whom I love. I still miss the tragically mishandled ANDY RICHTER CONTROLS THE UNIVERSE. Poor Andy is the male equivalent of Bonnie Hunt.

Judging from ABC's past record of killing quality dramas, you can say goodbye to THE NINE, although I wouldn't be surprised if unaired episodes were burned off on the Internet like NBC did with KIDNAPPED. I had a heads-up about THE NINE's cancellation. When I was visiting a friend on the Fox lot the last week of October, two well-dressed exec types walked past me and were discussing how THE NINE was dead. I quickly added it to my Brilliant But Canceled dead pool as soon as I could. The show was yanked a couple of weeks later.

Is it just me, or does Callista Flockhart look these days like a three-week old leftover apple pie that all the male actors have to pretend to still be hungering for?

I caught the Christmas episode and found it appealing and revolting in equal measure but Ron Rifkin was sheer magic. When he took the reins of the Hanukkah celebration I nearly wanted to convert. He's such a seasoned and cultured actor and his voice is so nuanced and commanding that he makes all the other actors, from talents like Rachel Griffiths and Patricia Wettig to all of the Just-Out-Of-Julliard young male actors, look like Tourette's victims.

Well, I don't know about THE NINE, but ABC has announced that it will stream DAYBREAK, including six unaired episodes, on its Web site beginning January 29.

It's hiatus time for the two SNL-inspired shows, says the IMDb:

"NBC plans to pull its critically praised but ratings-challenged comedies Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and 30 Rock from its schedule next month, replacing them with two new series. The Black Donnellys is set to debut on Monday, March 5 at 10:00 p.m., following the network's hit drama Heroes, while Andy Barker, P.I., starring Andy Richter takes over the 9:30 pm. time slot on Thursdays beginning March 15. The network promised that Studio 60 will return "later this season on a date to be determined." 30 Rock, which recently won a Golden Globe and SAG Award for star Alec Baldwin, is scheduled to return on April 19."
