Title: Anyone pick up the Cannibal Ferox Ultra-Bit LE?

Dean DeMarco - December 18, 2004 03:36 PM (GMT)
Just wondering if anyone out here has picked up the CANNIBAL FEROX Ultra-Bit LE #'d Tin dvd set?

Been away from the computer for a little while, and I'm amazed at the stuff that came out in the little time I was gone.

Anyone who has it and would care to comment on it, I'd appreciate it? How is it compared to the US released Grindhouse one? I was just checking it out over at the Xploited Cinema web-site, and it doesn't seem to have the amount of extra's on it that the Grindhouse one has, but I'm more interested in the a/v aspect of it anyway. Also, how are the 8 German postcard's that come with it, are they a pretty nice addition?

I don't have, nor have I heard of the company that put it out, Sazuma. So before I go forking over the $40 for it, I'd like to know if it's worth it first.

By the way, is there any significance to the amount of dvd's pressed of 3,333?

Thanks,
Dean

Although I have not seen it, I am sure the picture quality looks even better than the already-very good Grindhouse release. The image quality in Grindhouse's release is not perfect but personally I cannot complain because it's a major improvement to the vhs that I used to watch the previous years!

And yes, you are right the extras are not that great. I mean the Grindhoue release features a video-interview with Umberto himself plus a commentary with him and John Morghen (which I still haven't heard). Personally I couldn't ask for more.

So my opinion is that you should only buy the Sazuma release if you are a perfectionist or a completist. Otherwise don't waste $40 for a movie that you already own.

I would only buy it if the film ran longer or featured more extensive new interviews with Lenzi and cast.

3.333 copies means that it will disapear soon and that it will become a collector's item.... I'd rather stick to my Grindhouse disc.

I ordered it from Sazuma early last week, in transit now. I'll tell you what I think when it arrives (hopefully this week, but I'm not counting on it due to the holiday).

Sazuma seems to be an import/export dvd company in Austria(www.sazuma.com) with a rather good selection(shame they're overseas), I mentioned them in the thread I started about Germany's X-Rated Kult dvds. I think this Ferox tin is their first release or one of their first releases as a dvd producer.

I ordered the Sazuma tin mainly because I don't already own Ferox and I prefer better image quality over better extras.

Plus the box design is drool-worthy imo. :D

They released this film on DVD before, a few years back. Although it had an anamorphic transfer, it was terribly compressed.

I totally agree with that. I should have worded it that way, that my main concern was if the movie itself was longer, as well as the a/v part of it. And if there were extensive special features with it. Which it didn't appear to be from what I read about it over at Xploited. But then, I didn't know if all the extras were listed on the site or not? My main concern was the movie itself though, which probably using the Ultra-Bit, does look better. But since it isn't extended in any way, I think my Grindhouse copy will be just fine. I haven't heard of any lost footage, or whatnot, like how CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST has been put out, in various cuts, but I just wanted to make sure.

Speaking of CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST and Grindhouse, any word on that or is that a lost cause? I was soooo looking forward to them putting that out. But I guess the Special LE 2 disc Ultrabit, will do for now. Which does, IMHO, look pretty nice. But I still hope there's that Grindhouse release in the near future. If only for the extended special features I've heard about talked on here.

Thanks,
Dean

I don't have it, but from what I've read about it on other forums the concensus seems to be that if you really want the extras then the Grindhouse disc should be bought but if your main interest is in the quality of the picture/audio then Sazuma's is the one to go for.

I've also read on another forum that a couple of folk had a problem with their discs but most seem to be okay so they could just be unlucky.

Well, I got my copy in the mail today from Sazuma, quite quickly considering the holiday(shipped Tuesday of last week from Austria). #2725 of 3333, also got a free numbered mouse pad(#126 of 300) featuring some of the poster artwork. The tin's a very nice package, well constructed, very nice silk screened art on the front, high quality sticker-like(but unremovable) description on the back, with the info all in English and the copy number.

The dvd inside the case is in one of those very thin clear Amaray-style cases(like some tv boxsets have used lately). The eight postcards look to be based on the original German lobby cards. They're real postcards too(with the lines on the back and such). Decent photo choices. The cards come in a folded red cardboard envelope.

The picture quality is probably as good as this film is going to look on dvd, very VERY clean, the colors muted(as I'd expect from a film from the time and budget-level). I zoomed in several times and didn't notice much artifacting or edge enhancement in the scenes I sampled. Content-wise I'm not familiar enough with the film to know if this is an alternate version, but I doubt it is. Plenty gory. I'm not qualified to comment on the sound(poor system) but it sounded pretty good to me.

The extras are just trailers from several countries(USA, Germany, Italy if I recall), a Lenzi bio and filmography(in ok English), also two interesting trailers for two future Sazuma releases that look to be micro-budget American horror films. One was Divided into Zero the other Subconscious Cruelty. They looked to be by the same people(the cinematographer on the first is credited as director on the second). Disc Menus were in English as well, nothing special in their design.

Worth $40? It's a nice looking package and I'll rewatch it enough to justify a higher price than the the Grindhouse release(whose extras I likely would sample once) ...I'm satisfied.

Thanks for the break-down of the CANNIBAL FEROX set Henry. It sounds pretty enticing.

Also, here's a link to Xploited Cinema for the set.

I picked this one up from Tony before the holidays and NAIL GUN MASSACRE, as both are very limited editions (CF is 3333 and NAIL GUN is 500!!). My all-region player is fubar'd, so I need to get a new one before watching it, but the package is gorgeous!

I know this is off topic, but speaking of all-region players, I just purchased a Daewoo DVG-9200N from Target for $40, and it plays everything really nice. Even my Anamorphic R2 Pal's that I have, are playing correctly. The tray is pretty flimsy on it, but it played everything I threw in it. Matter of fact, I may pick up another one for a back-up player by the end of the week. I'm hooked up though to nothing special for a/v. All I have is a 26" flat-screen RCA stereo tv, no speaker system or anything like that. Nothing much, but it's about all I can afford, and it'll do for now. So I can't say much of anything for people that have a decent system they're running off of, and how it would look on their's. But as for my tv, it looks really nice.
